Metrogyl is an antibiotic medicine that helps you fight infections caused by bacteria and parasites. It helps:

1. In the treatment of bacterial infection-

Each 200 mg tablet contains Metronidazole, an antibacterial agent that can treat many infections caused by bacteria. These include brain infections, lungs, joints, stomach, intestines, blood, and bones. It also treats gum ulcers, other dental infections, pressure sores, and leg ulcers. Metronidazole treats above mentioned conditions by stopping the growth of bacteria causing the infection. 

2. In the treatment of parasitic infection-

Metrogyl 200 mg also helps treat parasitic infections such as amoebic dysentery. It stops the growth of parasites responsible for causing infection. This antibacterial medicine usually makes you feel better very quickly. However, you should continue taking it for as long as it is prescribed to you, even if your condition improves, to ensure all the parasites are destroyed and do not become resistant.

Metrogyl 200 mg contains Metronidazole as the main active salt composition.

Metrogyl is best taken after eating some food. It must be taken at the same time each day to get the most benefit from the drug. The prescribed dosage will depend on what you are being treated for and how bad your condition is; take this antibiotic medicine exactly as your doctor advises. Your symptoms may improve quickly, but you should not discontinue treatment until you have finished the course, even if you feel well. If you stop it too early, some bacteria may survive, and the infection may return. Do not consume alcohol while receiving Metronidazole and for a few days after stopping the medication. Otherwise, you may develop unpleasant side effects like vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain.

Before you use Metrogyl, let your doctor know if you are allergic to any medicine, have any hepatic or renal insufficiency, or have any nervous system disease. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, inform your doctor before taking this medicine. This antibacterial agent may lower blood count and cause convulsions. Use Metronidazole 200 mg with caution in patients with hepatic insufficiency due to an imbalance of body fluids, potential accumulation, a history of seizures, congestive heart failure: or other sodium retaining conditions. Dose reduction is often recommended in patients with severe liver impairment, central nervous system disorder, and severe kidney failure.

If H.pylori (that infects your stomach) is not eliminated in patients treated with Metrogyl 200 tablet, it should be assumed that metronidazole resistance has developed and should not be used again. Seizures and neuropathies have been reported, especially with increased doses; if this happens, discontinue treatment.  

The most common side effects of Metrogyl are nausea, headache, dry mouth, and a slightly metallic taste. Most of these side effects are usually mild but inform your doctor if they bother you or last more than a few days. You can try using sugarless candies or lozenges to reduce episodes of dryness or metallic tastes in the mouth.
