Calaptin SR 240 is given in hypertension, chronic stable angina and other heart associated problems. It contains Verapamil, which is a calcium channel blocker as it stops the influx of calcium ions through L type calcium channels. By inhibiting the entry of calcium channels, one can decrease the contractility of arterial smooth muscles and causes vasodilation. This all leads to relaxation of blood vessels and aids smooth arterial blood flow. In this way, it reduces the overall blood pressure. Treatment should be initiated only under medical supervision.  

Calaptin SR is taken three times a day with or without food. It can be taken with or without food a day. It is the best way to take medicine simultaneously because it shows the best results and helps remember when to take it. It is important to take this medication as instructed by your doctor. Abrupt discontinuation of medicine can cause adverse reactions. So before stopping the drug intake, always consult a physician first. The doctor may prescribe a lower dose to elderly patients. Also, the doctor should check your blood pressure as well as thyroid function regularly. If you take more tablets than you should, speak to your doctor. If you have an overdose, you may experience dizziness, confusion, slow heartbeat, sickness, liver damage, and tiredness. Keep taking medicine until your doctor asks you to discontinue treatment.  

You should not take Calaptin SR 240 if you are allergic to Verapamil, have liver problems, any other heart problems, recent heart attack or heart block or valve, or muscular dystrophy. You must avoid taking Verapamil if you are taking medication for hypertension and cancer or are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medicine can pass into breast milk and can cause fetal harm. Limit the intake of alcoholic beverages and avoid activity that requires alertness as it causes dizziness. Monitor your blood pressure levels regularly. Liver, electrocardiogram (ECG), kidney function, complete blood count tests are performed. Certain drugs interact with Verapamil and reduce its effectiveness. These include propranolol, clonidine, disopyramide, erythromycin, telithromycin, rifampin, st. John’s wort, digoxin, dronedarone, paclitaxel, ranolazine, tolvaptan, and opioid analgesics. 

Common side effects of Calaptin SR 240 are Nausea and vomiting, dizziness, tired feeling, headache, lightheadedness, fatigue, stomach pain. Serious side effects which need medical attention are Severe dizziness, rashes, itching or hives, yellowing of skin or eyes, abdominal pain and discomfort, chest pain, and irregular heartbeat.
