Fluconazole is an anti-fungal medicine used to treat skin infections. It is a well known drug used for various sorts of fungal infections. It belongs to triazole class of antifungals. Fluconazole is one of the medicines mentioned in the list of essential medicines for basic health system maintained by world health organization. This medicine aims to kill the causative agents and cures the infection. It is available on our website in the form of two dosage forms, i.e. dispersible tablets and oral tablets. Dispersible tablets are uncoated or film coated tablets that can be dispersed in liquid before administration and is generally preferred by geriatric or pediatric patients. Understanding the drug Fluconazole:

Fluconazole is a potent anti-fungal drug that kills the causative agents and treats the multiple fungal ailments.  

How it works?

Fluconazole stops the  synthesis of ergosterol, which is a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. This medicine blocks the 4-α demethylase, a cytochrome P-450 enzyme needed for the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol. It  causes fungal cell wall death by eliminating the intracellular elements needed for its survival:

  • It increases cellular permeability that leads to leakage of essential  cellular elements 
  • It also stops endogenous respiration
  • It inhibits the conversion of yeast into mycelial forms
  • It stops the biosynthesis of phospholipids, by limiting the uptake of purine and triglycerides

When should you avoid it?

You should not take Fluconazole if you:

  • Are allergic to Fluconazole
  • Are prone to allergies, food or medicines
  • Are suffering from heart diseases such as stroke, hypertension and rhythm disorder
  • Are a cancer patient      
  • Have immunocompromised disease like AIDS or HIV infection
  • Have any sort of problem in kidney functioning
  • Are suffering from cystic fibrosis
  • Are pregnant or planning to become a pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding a child

How much to take?

The dosage is solely decided by the Doctor after assessing your condition and various factors such as age, gender and body weight. The dose starts from 50 mg and can be increased  maximally up to 800 mg. One can’t fix the dose as it varies from patient to patient. Always take the dose prescribed by the Doctor.

How to take?

Fluconazole is taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the oral tablet with a full glass of water.  Don’t break the tablet. In case of dispersible tablets,  one can disperse the tablet in a liquid medium.

Fluconazole can be taken as recommended by the drug. The dose intake depends upon your condition and it varies from person to person. Always take the medicine as per the prescription.
