Topmac is a prescription medicine given to adults and children (two years old and above) as monotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed epilepsy. It affects as add-on therapy in partial-onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, or Lennox-Gestaut syndrome. Your doctor may also prescribe Topamac for the prevention of migraine headaches. The effectiveness of this medicine in the acute treatment of migraine headaches has not been studied. The active ingredient present in the Topamac tab is Topiramate.
Topamac is available in the form of a tablet. Do not chew the tablet as it may leave a bitter taste like this. You can take it without regard to meals. Drink plenty of fluids to prevent kidney stones while receiving antiepileptic treatment. You should not consume alcohol during the entire treatment. You can take the pill before, during, or after a meal. Do not stop the treatment unless advised by your doctor. The symptoms may return if you stop the treatment. Topamac may cause eye complications. These include:
- a sudden decrease in vision accompanied with or without eye pain and redness
- Glaucoma, an eye condition characterized by increased pressure in the eye
These eye conditions can ultimately lead to complete vision loss. You should consult your doctor straight away if you develop new eye symptoms. Topiramate may cause decreased sweating and fever. Patients receiving this antiepileptic drug should be watched for signs of decreased sweating and fever, especially in hot weather. Some people may need hospitalization for this condition. You must inform your doctor straight away if you have a high fever that doesn’t resolve within a few days.
The medicine may increase the level of acid in your blood. The condition is often referred to as metabolic acidosis. If the condition is left untreated, it can cause osteoporosis and kidney stones. Metabolic acidosis can occur with or without symptoms. Sometimes people dealing with this condition will feel changes in heartbeat, feel tired, have trouble thinking, and lose appetite. Your doctor should perform blood tests to measure the level of acid in your bloodstream during the treatment.
Do not drink alcohol while receiving the Topamac 50 mg. Antiepileptic drugs and alcohol can affect each other and cause side effects such as dizziness and sleepiness. Avoid the driving of operating a heavy machine that requires you to alert until you know how this medication affects you. A topiramate formulation can slow down your motor skills and may affect your eyesight.
Topamac 50 may cause serious side effects, including:
- Kidney stones: Drink plenty of fluids to decrease the risk of getting a kidney stone
- High ammonia in the bloodstream can affect your mental activities, decrease your alertness, make you feel tired, or cause vomiting.
- Effects on motor skills - Topiramate may affect how you think and cause confusion, problems concentration, memory, or speech. The antiepileptic rug may cause depression or mood problems.
