Esperal 250 mg is a medicine that is used to treat chronic alcoholism. It is an alcohol-abuse deterrent. The medicine is used on a person who is addicted to the consumption of the alcoholic drink. It produces an acute sensitivity to alcohol. Disulfiram, the active ingredient of the medicine, is used to treat patients with chronic alcoholism. It is used along with psychotherapy, behaviour modification, support, and counselling to treat deep-rooted alcoholism. However, Disulfiram is not a cure for chronic alcoholism.

Alcoholism is a term used for any drinking of alcohol that leads to problems. Disulfiram is used to treat this alcohol use disorder by producing an acute sensitivity to ethanol or alcohol. The medicine is usually being tolerated to the same thing.

You can take Esperal tablets with or after consuming food. Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. Remember to take the first dose of the medicine for at least 12 hours after consuming food. Follow your doctors' advice when it comes to taking medicine. Do not skip the doses and finish the full course of treatment. Do not stop treatment without discussing it with your doctor. Remember, while taking medicine, avoid alcoholic beverages, mouthwashes, vinegar, and liquid medications.

If you have an allergy to Disulfiram or any other ingredients of the medicine. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Esperal. Make sure you tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had. An allergic reaction's symptoms include itching, hives, wheezing, shortness of breath, cough, swelling of face, lips, tongue, and throat if you have health problems such as heart disease or schizophrenia. If you consume wine, beer, or mixed drinks or take any medications that have alcohol.

• In patients receiving or have currently received paraldehyde, metronidazole, alcohol, or alcohol-containing products.
• Patients are warned to avoid alcohol in disguised forms, i.e., vinegar, cough mixtures, sauces, and even aftershave lotions. The patient must be strongly cautioned against surreptitious drinking while taking medicine.
• Disulfiram should never be administered to a patient who is in a state of alcohol intoxication. The patient must be fully aware of the Disulfiram-alcohol reaction. The reactions may also occur with alcohol up to 14 days after ingesting Disulfiram tablets.
• Because of the chances of an accidental Disulfiram-alcohol reaction, the drug should be used with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, cerebral damage, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, chronic and acute nephritis, epilepsy, hepatic cirrhosis, or insufficiency.

The most frequent side effects at the recommended dose of Esperal are headaches, tiredness, acne, drowsiness, and metallic or garlic taste in the mouth. Some other side effects of the medicine usage may include abdominal pain, liver disease, vision changes, decreased sexual ability, rash, trouble breathing, rash itching, confusion, muscle weakness, mood changes, tingling of arms and legs, swelling of the face, tongue and throat. The side effects of Disulfiram are not restricted to the mentioned above. Inform your doctor straight away if you observe any unwanted non-therapeutic effect.
