Dutas 0.5 mg is used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This is when the prostate is enlarged in men and causes problems with urinating. An enlarged prostate can also cause the flow of urine to be slower and less forceful. If left untreated, you may develop acute urinary retention, where the urine flow will get completely blocked. This condition requires immediate medical attention.
In some cases, surgery is necessary to remove or reduce the size of the prostate gland. Dutasteride is similar to Finasteride (the active ingredient in Propecia and Proscar) in that it inhibits DHT. Dutas 0.5 shrinks the enlarged prostate over time and bring relief from the symptoms commonly associated with BPH. This will reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgery. Dutasteride, the medicine's active ingredient, belongs to the group of medicines called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Doctors may prescribe these capsules, and another medicine called tamsulosin is used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
Take Dutasteride exactly as directed by your doctor. Take each dose with a full glass of water and swallow the capsules. Do not chew, crush, or break the capsules. Dutasteride can be taken with or without food. The recommended dose is one capsule of 0.5 mg once a day. Swallow the capsule with a glass full of water. Do not chew or open the capsule. Contact with the content of the Dutas capsule may make your mouth or throat sore.
Dutas 0.5 mg is a long-term treatment. Some men may notice an early improvement in their urinary symptoms. However, others may need to take this drug for up to six months before it begins to have an effect. Keep taking the capsules for as long as your doctor tells you.
Do not stop taking Dutas 0.5 mg without first talking to your doctor.
While some men have fewer problems and symptoms after 3 months of treatment with Dutasteride, a treatment period of at least 6 months is usually necessary to see if treatment with Dutasteride will be beneficial.
In some clinical studies, patients taking Dutasteride along with tamsulosin experienced heart failure than patients taking Dutasteride alone. Let your doctor know of your liver problems. You may need additional check-p while taking the capsule if you suffer from liver impairment.
Some medicines can react with Dutasteride and make it more likely to cause side effects. These medicines include antidepressants, high blood pressure medicines, HIV medicines, drugs for fungal infections, and other medicines for enlarged prostate. Contact your doctor if you have any questions about using Dutas 0.5 mg.
Dutasteride side effects include impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection), a decrease in libido (sex drive), breast enlargement and tenderness (gynecomastia), and a decrease in the amount of semen released during sex. These side effects usually decrease or disappear with continued usage or stopping the medication altogether.
