Cetil 500 mg is an antibiotic medication containing cefuroxime as the active ingredient. Cefuroxime belongs to a group of antibiotics class of medication known as cephalosporins. The antibiotic medication is like penicillin, which works by killing the bacteria and can be used to treat various infections. Like all antibiotic drugs, Cetil 500 mg effectively treats bacterial infections; it will not treat viral infections such as common cold and flu. Cefuroxime effectively treats infections of the ear, sinus, throat, chest, bladder, skin, and skin structure infections. It is effective in the treatment of Lyme disease. Your doctor may ask to take medicine with food as this makes the treatment more effective.

Always take Cetil as prescribed by your doctor. You should check with your doctor if you have any doubt related to medicine’s usage. In general, the dosage of the antibiotic depends on the sensitivity of the germ and the site of infection. The medicine is available in the tablet form that you need to take with some fluid shortly after a meal to ensure ideal absorption. For adults, the usual treatment duration is 5 to 10 days. Some bacterial infections require long term treatment to prevent late complications.

Do not take Cetil 500 mg if you are hypersensitive to the active ingredient Cefuroxime or any other medicine ingredients. Also, do not use it if you are allergic to other cephalosporins antibiotics or have a history of allergic reactions. Before you use Cetil, speak to your doctor if you are allergic to penicillins, kidney problems, phenylketonuria, diabetes mellitus, are pregnant or breastfeeding. The antibiotic medication may cause dizziness, do not drive, or indulge in activities that require you to alert.  

Certain medications can interact with Cetil and decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotic medication. Medicines used to reduce the amount of acid in your stomach, including antacids, affect how cefuroxime works. Drugs used to promote urine production may increase the risk of kidney problems while receiving Cetil tablets.  

Cefuroxime may make your contraceptive pill less effective. Therefore, it is best to use a barrier method of contraception. Ask your doctor for more information related to drug interaction.

Like other medicines, Cetil 500 mg, can cause side effects, although not everybody who receive antibiotic therapy experience side effects. If any of these side effects occur, please talk to your doctor:

• Sudden breathing troubles, wheezing, difficulty swallowing, swelling of your lips, face, lips, or body. These are the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.
• Tiredness, yellowing of eyes, skin can be symptoms of liver problems.
• Severe rash accompanied by high fever and joint pain. There may be blisters and bleeding in the lips, eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals. This could be an indication of erythema multiforme.

Common side effects associated with the use of Cefuroxime 500 mg are stomach problems, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, kidney disease, urinary problems, fever, or skin rash with or without itching.
