Yasmin is an oral contraceptive that helps to lower the chance of becoming pregnant when taken as directed. These tablets do not protect against HIV infection (AIDS)D and other sexually transmitted diseases. Yasmin contains two female hormones, a synthetic estrogen, oestradiol, and a progestin called drospirenone. Your chance of conceiving depends on how well you follow the directions for taking oral contraceptives. When it comes to taking Yasmin, the better you follow the directions., the less chance you have of conceiving.

Be sure to read the instructions carefully before taking Yasmin 3 mg. In general, the right way to take the tablet simultaneously is in the order directed on your prescription paper. Preferably take the tablet after the evening meal or at bedtime with water. Yasmin can be taken before or after meals. If you miss the pill, you could get pregnant. The more dose you miss, the more likely you are to get pregnant.

Your doctor will not give you Yasmin if any of the following applies to you:

  — Ever had a stroke

  — Ever had a heart attack

  — Have diabetes

  — Ever had breast cancer or any cancer that is sensitive to the female hormone

  — Have high blood pressure that the medicine can’t control

  — Ever had certain kinds of severe migraine headaches that are accompanied by aura, numbness, weakness, or changes in vision

  — Have kidney or liver disease

  — Have adrenal disease

  — Ever had clots in your eyes, lungs and legs.

Also, you should not take the pill if you smoke and are over 35 years of age. Oral contraceptives may not be a good choice if you have ever had jaundice

One of the active components, drospirenone, may increase potassium. Therefore, you should not take this birth control pill if you have liver, kidney or adrenal disease because this could cause serious heart complications. Other drugs may also increase potassium levels. So if you are currently on daily- long treatment for a chronic condition with any of the medications given below, you should consult your doctor about whether Yasmin is appropriate for you. These are the medications that can increase potassium:

  — Potassium supplementation

  — Heparin

  — ACE inhibitors

  — NSAIDs

  — Potassium-sparing diuretics

  — Aldosterone antagonists

  — Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists

Oral contraceptives do not protect you against any sexually transmitted disease (STDs), including HIV, which causes AIDS. Do not miss any tablet if you do not often indulge in sexual activities. If you miss a pill, you could be pregnant. However, some ladies miss or have light periods on birth control pills, even when pregnant. Talk to your doctor for advice on the following conditions:

  — If you think you are pregnant

  — If you miss your one menstrual cycle and have not taken your birth control pills on time every day

  — Miss two menstrual cycles in a row

The most common side effects of Yasmin 3 mg are headache, breast tenderness, nausea, spotting, or bleeding between menstrual periods.
