Xtane 25 mg is a prescribed medicine for treating breast cancer in women. The main use of Xtane is for the treatment of hormonally responsive breast cancer. It is also effective for reducing the occurrence of breast tumors in women.
Xtane is an anticancer drug in the class of aromatase inhibitors; its active ingredient is Exemestane. Its primary function is to inhibit the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens (hormones that fuel cancer growth) to estrogens (hormones that promote cancer growth), thereby slowing the growth of breast cancer cells. Xtane is generally given to women whose disease progresses even after receiving the Tamoxifen therapy.
Usage instructions of the Exemestane tablet
Â
Strictly use the Xtane 25 tablet as prescribed by your doctor to get the maximum benefit. Your doctor will determine your dosage and frequency of taking medicine based on your symptoms and current health status. Never ignore your doctor’s instructions, as misuse can cause serious health complications. The usual recommended dose is one 25 mg tablet a day. Swallow the pill with water after a meal or snack to prevent digestive issues.
Do not alter the form of medication by chewing or dissolving it in water. Doing this may change the effects or even destroy the contents of the medicine. If you take too many tablets by accident, speak to your healthcare professional. Take the exemestane tablet pack with you. If you miss a dose of Xtane tablets, do not double up to make up for it. If you miss taking a tablet, take it as soon as you remember. If the next dose is due soon, take it on a scheduled time.
Things to remember, allergies, and warnings with the Exemestane tablet
Â
Do not take Xtane 25 mg if you have previously been allergic to Exemestane or any other ingredients of this medicine. Exemestane is not intended for use in children. You should not take this breast cancer medication if you have not already been through menopause (still having monthly periods). Also, if you are pregnant, likely to be pregnant or breastfeeding.
Before treatment, your healthcare provider may want to take blood samples to confirm that you have reached the menopause. Routine vitamin D screening should also be performed before treatment, as levels may be low in the early stages of cancer. You will be prescribed a vitamin D supplement if you lack an adequate amount of vitamin D. Problems with liver or kidney disease should be discussed with your healthcare provider. Let your healthcare specialist know if you have a history of, or are currently suffering from, conditions that directly affect your bone strength. Xtane 25 should not be used at the same time as hormone replacement therapy. Caution is advised when taking anticonvulsants to treat epilepsy (phenytoin or carbamazepine), rifampicin (an antibiotic), the herbal remedy St. John's Wort, or preparations containing it. Â Â
Side effects of Exemestane tablet
Â
Like all medicines, Exemestane Xtane 25mg can cause side effects, though not everyone gets them. Inflammation of the liver, hypersensitivity, and inflammation of the bile ducts of the liver, which contribute to yellowing of the skin (cholestatic hepatitis), may occur. Symptoms of the condition may include nausea, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), feeling generally unwell, itching, loss of appetite, and right-sided abdominal pain.
Seek immediate medical advice if you think you are developing any of these symptoms. Xtane is generally well-tolerated; if side effects occur, they are mild to moderate and resolve on their own after some time. Most of the side effects are associated with a shortage of estrogen (hot flushes).
Other common side effects include difficulty sleeping, depression, feeling sick, headache, increased sweating, tiredness, abdominal pain, elevated levels of liver enzymes, increased levels of haemoglobin breakdown in the blood, and increased levels of a blood enzyme due to liver damage, loss of appetite, pain, muscle and joint pain, a reduction in white blood cells, hair loss, skin rash, osteoporosis (thinning of bones), weakness, swollen hands and feet. If you get any side effects that become bothersome, talk to your healthcare specialist straight away.  Â
