Virovir 250 mg is an antiviral medicine that contains famciclovir as the active ingredient. It works by stopping the infection from reproducing inside the body. Since the virus reproduces very early in the infection, you will benefit from Virovir 250 if you take this antiviral drug as soon as the first symptoms appear. Famciclovir 250 mg is effective in treating the following viral infections in adults:

• Shingles (herpes Zoster), a viral infection caused by a virus called varicella-zoster. Virovir stops the virus from spreading, leading to rapid healing. This Famciclovir formulation effectively treats shingles in the area around the eyes or of the eyes.
• Genital herpes, a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2. It appears as painful blisters or itchy genitals. The viral infection is normally spread by sexual contact. Famciclovir is an effective treatment for genital herpes infections in adults.

The daily dose and length of treatment will depend on the type of viral infection you are suffering from, and your doctor will prescribe a dose that best suits your condition. For best results, begin treatment as soon as possible as the first signs and symptoms appear. Do not have sexual contact with anyone if you have clear signs of genital herpes or even if you have started treatment with Famciclovir. This is because you could pass the herpes virus to your partner. 

The recommended dose of this drug for adults is 250 mg twice every day. This drug can be consumed either without food or after having proper meals. The dose should be adjusted as per the patient's response towards the drug under the supervision of your doctor. Report your doctor after a regular time interval of 3 to 4 weeks.

Do not take Virovir 250 tablet if you are allergic to famciclovir or any of the inactive ingredients of the medicine or penciclovir. Speak to your doctor if you think you may be allergic. Talk to your doctor before taking Virovir if you have kidney problems, liver problems, or problems with your immune system. Antiviral medicine is not recommended for use in children and adolescents. If you are receiving this antiviral therapy to treat or to suppress genital herpes, or you have had genital herpes in the past, you should practice safe sex, including the use of effective contraceptive measures. This helps to prevent you from passing the infection on to others. You should not indulge in sexual activities if you have genital sores or blisters. Let your doctor know if you are taking any other medicines. It is especially important to tell your doctor about raloxifene, probenecid, or other medicines that can affect your kidneys. Antiviral medicine should not be used during pregnancy unless advised by your doctor. Before taking this drug, let your doctor know if you are pregnant; your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of taking medicine. If you are of childbearing age with genital herpes, you should avoid intercourse when symptoms are present.   

Common side effects of Virovir 250 include itching, rash, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea dizziness, and stomach pain.
