Calcitriol is the main active ingredient present in Rocaltrol– 0.25 mg Tablet. Calcitriol belongs to the group of medications called vitamin D3 metabolites, which actively regulates and absorbs the calcium from the gastrointestinal tract and its utilization in the body. This drug corrects calcium and phosphate metabolism abnormalities in patients with renal osteodystrophy. A deficiency of vitamin D can happen for many reasons: insufficient sunlight exposure, excessive sunscreen, wearing protective clothes all the time, and age factors. Rocaltrol 0.25 mcg helps in maintaining optimum bone health.  

This medicine treats conditions caused by abnormal parathyroid hormone levels or low calcium levels in the blood. It is usually used in people who are on dialysis. Calcitriol is also used to treat or prevent Rickets, Osteomalacia, and Hypophosphatemia and is used in premature babies with low blood calcium levels.

The dose will be decided according to the patient's condition; therefore, it is advised to take this medication per your doctor’s direction.

Rocaltrol is available in the form of a tablet to be taken orally by mouth with ample water; it is advised to take this medicine as prescribed by the doctor.

   — Calcitriol should not be used in patients allergic to the active ingredient or other components present in this formulation.

   — This drug should not be given to a pregnant woman

   — Breastfeeding mothers must not take this drug because it may harm the unborn child as it tends to pass through the breast milk

   — Do not take this medicine if you have a high vitamin D or calcium level in the blood.

   — Patients who recently had congestive heart failure should consult their doctor before taking this medicament.

   — This drug may be more sensitive to older people, so use it with caution in older adults.

Rocaltrol is safe and usually does not render any side effects; tell your doctor if any side effects bother you or do not go away. Commonly reported side effects of Rocaltrol 0.25 mg Tablet are: fever, weight loss, stomach cramps, restlessness, increased thirst, lower back pain, leg cramp, constipation, hair loss, lightheadedness, dry mouth, drowsiness, discolored urine, eye irritation, rash, skin redness, throat infection, numbness.
