Regestrone 5 mg is a prescription treatment for patients with various menstrual problems, including heavy, painful periods, premenstrual syndrome, and endometriosis (a disease in which tissue like the lining of the uterus). It contains Norethisterone, an artificial version of the natural female sex hormone progesterone. Regestrone is also effective in delaying the menstrual cycle.

Regestrone 5 mg is effective in the treatment of:

    –   Heavy menstrual bleeding

Progesterone slows the growth of the lining of the womb before menstruation, which minimizes the bleeding during menstruation.   

    –    Pain during menstruation

Norethisterone counters the effects of another hormone called estrogen and reduces pain during periods. It can be used during a particular part of the menstrual cycle. You may have to use NSAIDs (painkillers) as well for rapid pain relief. Discuss which one is more suitable with your healthcare provider.    

    –    Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a disease where tissue, like the uterus lining, begins to grow in other places. Commonly reported symptoms associated with the condition include period pain, pain in your lower stomach or back, pain during and after sex, feeling sick, diarrhea, and constipation. This may make it difficult for you to get pregnant. Regestrone-containing Norethisterone is a synthetic hormone that acts like a natural progesterone hormone, which prevents the lining of the uterus and any endometriosis tissue from growing too quickly. This helps to relieve the symptoms you may have. 

    –   Premenstrual syndrome

Regestrone 5 mg may help reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, such as tiredness, anxiousness, mood swings, breast tenderness, bloating, and headaches. It may treat PMS but is not always recommended for this purpose.  

The recommended dose will depend on the condition you are being treated for. The dose will be decided based on how much you need to improve your symptoms. Swallow the tablet with a glass full of water. Regestrone 5 mg may be taken before or after consuming food. One should take this medicine for as long as it is prescribed to you.   

Do not take Regestrone if any of the following applies to you and you are/have:

     –    Allergic to Norethisterone, similar medications, or other medicine ingredients.

     –    Pregnant or think you might be pregnant

     –    Ever had vaginal bleeding for which your healthcare professional could not find a cause.

     –    Ever had a problem with blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis

     –    Severe generalized itching all over your body

     –    A condition called porphyria (a rare inherited blood disorder)

Speak to your healthcare provider before taking Regestrone tablets if you are suffering from conditions like asthma, epilepsy, migraine headaches, kidney problems, heart problems, and epilepsy.  

Regestrone is not recommended for use in patients with blood clots in the lung, heart attack, liver disease, liver disorder, angina (chest pain), and deep vein thrombosis (when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually in the legs).     

The most reported side effects of this medicine include nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, headache, breast tenderness, and vaginal spotting. Seek immediate medical help if any of these become bothersome or serious, as there may be ways to reduce or prevent them. Some side effects may mean you should discontinue treatment, including if you develop migraine, jaundice, or changes to your speech or senses. You should also not take this drug if you become pregnant or if your blood pressure becomes too high.
