| Active Ingredient | Ciclopirox Olamine |
Nailrox 8% is a prescription antifungal medication used to treat fungal skin and nail infections. It is a nail lacquer intended for topical use on fingernails, toenails, and a little around the nail. Each gram of the topical solution contains 8% of the active ingredient Ciclopirox olamine. The topical treatment is recommended for immunocompetent patients with mild-to-moderate onychomycosis of the fingernails and toenails. The comprehensive management includes removal of the unattached, infected nails, performed monthly by a healthcare specialist specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of nail diseases, including minor nail procedures.
Fungal nail infections can cause discolouration, brittleness, thickening, and nail deformation. If not treated, the fungal infection may worsen over time and spread to the surrounding skin of the infected nail. Ciclopirox nail lacquer penetrates deep into the nail plate and ultimately reaches the bed, where the fungus resides. There, it affects the fungal cell membrane, disrupts cellular processes, and inhibits fungal growth, thereby treating the infection. Nailrox is a convenient, non-invasive, and effective solution for achieving clear or healthy nails when used consistently as instructed by your healthcare specialist.
Usage methods of Ciclopirox olamine topical solution
Nailrox 8% nail lacquer should be used only under medical supervision. Avoid the solution coming into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth. Also, contact with skin other than the immediately surrounding area of the treated nails should be strictly avoided. Topical Ciclopirox should be applied evenly to the entire nail plate and to a small area of surrounding skin. If possible, the nail solution should be applied to the nail bed and under the nail plate when the nail plate is free of the nail bed (e.g., onycholysis). When the 8% solution comes in contact with the surrounding skin, it may produce mild, transient irritation. Nailrox requires the removal of the loose, infected nail by a healthcare professional, typically monthly.
The solution should not be removed daily. A regular application should be made over the previous coat, and the coating should be removed with alcohol every week. This cycle should be repeated throughout the entire treatment. Discuss with your healthcare specialist an appropriate nail management program if you have diabetes or numbness in your toes or fingers. Also, let them know if signs of increased irritation, such as blistering, burning, itching, oozing, or swelling, occur at the application site. Daily application of nail lacquer for up to 48 weeks, combined with the removal of the loose, infected nail by a medical professional, as often as monthly, is considered the full treatment required to achieve a clear nail. However, a completely clear nail may not be achieved with this topical medication.
Warning and precautions with Ciclopirox olamine topical solution
No evidence to show whether Ciclopirox might reduce the effectiveness of systemic antifungal agents for the treatment of onychomycosis. Therefore, the concomitant use of Nailrox 8% and systemic antifungal agents for the same nail infection is not recommended. The safety and effectiveness of this topical solution have not been studied in a specific population. The nail lacquer excluded patients who were pregnant, planned to become pregnant, had a history of immunosuppression, were HIV seropositive, received an organ transplant, or needed medication to control epilepsy, were insulin dependent diabetes, or had diabetic neuropathy. The safety and effectiveness of using nail lacquer for more than 48 weeks have not been established. If reactions suggesting sensitivity or chemical irritation occur with the use of ciclopirox topical solution 8%, treatment should be stopped and appropriate therapy initiated. Till now, there are no adequate research studies related to patients with insulin-dependent diabetes or who have diabetic neuropathy. The risks associated with the healthcare specialist's removal of the unattached, infected nail and the patient's trimming of the nail should be carefully considered before patients with a history of insulin-dependent diabetes or diabetic neuropathy use nail lacquer.
Use of nail polish and other nail cosmetics on treated nails should be avoided. Do not apply the product near heat or an open flame, as Ciclopirox is flammable.
Side effects of Ciclopirox olamine topical solution
The most common side effects of Ciclopirox olamine Nailrox 8% solution include a burning or stinging sensation at the application site. These side effects are not usually serious and often resolve over time. If they become troublesome or don't go away, seek immediate medical help.
