Monocef injection is used for the treatment of the following  infections:

    — Lower respiratory infections (particularly pneumonia, ear, nose, and throat infection)

    — Urinary tract infections

    — Skin and skin structure infections

    — Bone and joint infections

    — Infections in patients with an impaired defence mechanism

    — Intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, infections of the biliary and gastrointestinal tracts

    — Meningitis. Monocef injection should not be used for the treatment of meningitis caused by L. Monocuytogenes

    — Uncomplicated Gonorrhea

    — The preoperative administration of 1 mg of Monocef for injection may reduce the incidence of postoperative infections in patients undergoing abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy, coronary artery bypass surgery, or in patients at risk of infection undergoing biliary tract surgery. If symptoms of post-surgical infection should occur, appropriate treatment may be introduced.

The usual dosage for adults and children over 12 years of age is 1 gm Monocef injection once daily. In severe cases or infections caused by moderately sensitive organisms, the dosage may be increased to 4 mg once daily. The usual adult dosage should be used for children weighing 50 kg or more. The duration of treatment varies according to the course of the disease. As with antibiotic therapy in general, administration of Monocef injection should be continued for a minimum of 48 to 72 hours after there’s evidence of bacterial eradication has been obtained. In general, use the formulation immediately after preparation. Get your dosage prescribed by a doctor for the right treatment.

Do not use diluents containing calcium, such as Hartmann’s solution and Ringer’s solutions, to reconstitute Monocef. Ceftriaxone and calcium-containing solutions should not be mixed or administered to patients, irrespective of age.

Monocef injection is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Ceftriaxone or other components of the medicine, other cephalosporins, and penicillin.

Speak to your doctor before you are given Monocef injection if you have the following:

    — Had diarrhoea after having an antibiotic medicine or have had problems with your gut (inflammation of the bowel)

    — Renal insufficiency

    — Kidney stones

    — Reduction in your red blood cells that may make your skin pale yellow and cause breathlessness

    — On a low-sodium diet

    — Develop a combination of symptoms, such as red skin, rash, skin peeling, blistering of the lips, skin peeling, eyes and mouth, flu-like symptoms, an increase in white blood cells and enlarged lymph nodes.

Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines. In particular, let your doctor know if you are taking an antibiotic called aminoglycoside and chloramphenicol to treat eye infections.

Ceftriaxone may cause dizziness, so if you feel dizzy, avoid driving or operating machines that require your attention. Speak to your doctor if you develop these symptoms.

Common side effects of Monocef 1 g injection are rash, loose stools or diarrhoea, changes in the results of blood tests for liver functions, and abnormalities with your white blood cells. Treatment with Monocef 500, particularly in elderly patients with serious liver or kidney or nervous system problems, may rarely cause decreased abnormal movements, consciousness, agitation, and convulsions. If you get any side effects, please talk to your doctor.
