Active Ingredient Misoprostol

Misoprost 200 mcg for Gastrointestinal Health — Trusted Generic Cytotec

Misoprost 200 mcg prevents bleeding immediately after childbirth (postpartum haemorrhage) in women when oxytocin (a commonly prescribed injectable treatment) is unavailable. It contains the active ingredient Misoprostol, which is also given for induction of labour and treatment of incomplete abortion. The medicine may also be used with another agent called mifepristone for abortion.

The recommended dose is one of 3 tablets of oral Misoprostol 200 mcg. To ensure full dose administration, swallow the tablet and do not crush or break it.

For labour induction, dissolve one Misoprost 200 mcg tablet in 200 ml of water and take 25 ml of that solution, equivalent to 25 mcg misoprostol, as a single dose. Take each dose after two hours until labour starts.

For treatment of missed abortion, the recommended dose is three tablets of Misoprostol 200 mcg tablet.

For treatment for medical abortion less than seven weeks (49 days) of pregnancy

Take the medicine under a doctor’s supervision experienced in treating pregnant women and medical abortion.

First, you may be advised to take another medicine, Mifepristone 200 mcg orally. Then, 24 to 48 hours later, take two tablets of Misoprostol 200 mcg as a single dose.

Concomitant intake of food may reduce blood levels of this medicine. Therefore, Misoprost should preferably be taken on an empty stomach. However, it can be taken without consideration of food intake if required in life-threatening situations. The medicine should not be adjusted if your kidney or liver function is impaired.

Do not take Misoprost 200 mcg tablets if allergic to Misoprostol or other medicine ingredients. Also, avoid taking the medicine if you:

    –   Have had previous allergic reactions to prostaglandins.

    –   Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the combination treatment

    –   With severe liver diseases

    –   With inherited porphyria (a rare metabolic disorder)

    –   With acute failure of the adrenal gland

    –   In whom the embryo is known or suspected to grow outside the uterus

    –   These tablets must not be used for abortion in women.

Speak to your doctor before taking Misoprostol tablets if you have heart disease, have bleeding disorders, or have been using corticosteroids (to reduce inflammation).

Misoprostol tablets should not be given to children below pubertal age.

Headache, tiredness, and dizziness have been reported while receiving Misoprostol tablets. If you develop these symptoms, you should avoid potentially hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery.

Like all medicines, Misoprost 200 mcg can give rise to side effects, although not everybody gets them. The side effects observed after Misoprost intake include:

Common side effects are nausea (feeling sick), headache, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhoea, chills, shivering, and fever.

When used for induction of labour, uterine cramping and rupture, as well as distress to the unborn, may occur. When used for abortion, prolonged menstrual-like bleeding and incomplete embryo expulsion have been reported.

What is Misoprost 200 mcg used for?

Misoprost 200 mcg contains misoprostol, a medicine that protects your stomach lining from damage. It's used to prevent stomach ulcers, especially in people taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (pain relievers like ibuprofen or naproxen). Misoprostol works by reducing stomach acid and increasing the protective mucus layer. It may also be used for other medical purposes as prescribed by your doctor. Take this tablet exactly as your doctor instructs.

How does Misoprost 200 mcg work in the body?

Misoprost 200 mcg works by mimicking a natural substance in your body called prostaglandin. When you take this tablet, it increases mucus production in your stomach and reduces acid secretion, protecting your stomach lining from damage. It also helps your stomach muscles contract in a coordinated way, improving movement of food through your digestive system. This action makes it useful for preventing ulcers, particularly those caused by anti-inflammatory medicines, and for treating certain digestive conditions.

How long should I keep using Misoprost 200 mcg?

The length of treatment depends on why your doctor prescribed Misoprost. For stomach ulcer prevention, you typically take it for as long as you're using NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). For other conditions, your doctor will specify the duration. Never stop taking Misoprost without consulting your doctor, as this could affect your treatment. Always follow your doctor's instructions about how long to continue, and discuss any concerns about your treatment duration with them.

What should I do if I forget to take a dose of Misoprost 200 mcg?

If you forget to take a dose of Misoprost 200 mcg, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you're unsure about what to do, contact your doctor or pharmacist for guidance. Setting a daily alarm can help you remember to take your doses on time.

What things can affect how well Misoprost 200 mcg works?

Several factors can reduce how well Misoprost works. Taking it with food or antacids containing magnesium or aluminium can decrease absorption. Diarrhoea or vomiting may prevent your body from absorbing the full dose. Certain medicines, particularly those affecting stomach acid, may interfere with effectiveness. Your age, kidney function, and overall health can also matter. Always take Misoprost exactly as prescribed on an empty stomach when possible. If you're concerned about effectiveness, speak with your doctor before making any changes to how you take it.

How will I know if Misoprost 200 mcg is working for me?

You'll know Misoprost 200 mcg is working if your stomach ulcer symptoms improve. You should notice less stomach pain, heartburn, and discomfort within a few weeks of starting treatment. If you're taking it to prevent ulcers from NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen), you may not have obvious symptoms—your doctor can confirm healing through an endoscopy (a camera test inside your stomach). Keep taking your tablets as prescribed, even if you feel better. Contact your doctor if symptoms don't improve after four weeks or worsen.

What are the common side effects of Misoprost 200 mcg, and should I be worried?

Most people tolerate Misoprost 200 mcg well, but common side effects include diarrhoea [loose stools], stomach cramps, nausea, and abdominal pain. These usually occur within the first few days and often improve as your body adjusts. If side effects are severe or persistent, contact your doctor—do not stop taking this medicine without medical advice. Serious side effects are rare but require immediate attention. Always inform your healthcare provider about any concerning symptoms.

Is it safe to use Misoprost 200 mcg for a long period of time?

Misoprost is not intended for long-term use. It's typically prescribed for short-term treatment, usually a few weeks. Prolonged use can increase the risk of side effects like diarrhoea and abdominal cramping. Your doctor will determine the appropriate duration for your specific condition. Never continue taking Misoprost beyond the prescribed period without consulting your doctor first, as they need to monitor your treatment and adjust it based on your individual needs and response.

Are there any foods or drinks I should avoid while on Misoprost 200 mcg?

You can eat and drink normally while taking Misoprost 200 mcg tablets. There are no specific foods or drinks you need to avoid. However, taking your tablet with food may help reduce stomach upset, which is a common side effect. If you experience nausea or stomach discomfort, try taking your dose with a meal or snack. Always follow your doctor's instructions about when and how to take your tablets.

Can I use Misoprost 200 mcg alongside my other medicines or supplements?

Misoprost may interact with certain medicines and supplements, so you need to tell your doctor about everything you're currently taking before starting this medication. Some drugs can affect how misoprostol works or increase the risk of side effects. Your doctor or pharmacist can check for potential interactions and adjust your treatment if needed. Never start, stop, or change any medicine without speaking to your healthcare provider first. Always bring a complete list of all your medicines, supplements, and vitamins to your appointments.

Can older adults or children use Misoprost 200 mcg safely?

Misoprost 200 mcg is not suitable for children — it's only approved for adults. Older adults can use it safely at standard doses, but they may need closer monitoring because they're more likely to experience side effects like diarrhoea or stomach discomfort. If your older relative needs this medicine, their doctor will adjust the dose if necessary. Always tell your doctor about any other medicines they take, as some can interact with misoprostol. Never give this medicine to a child without explicit medical direction.

Do I need a different dose of Misoprost 200 mcg if I have kidney or liver problems?

You may need a different dose if you have kidney or liver problems. Misoprostol is processed by your body through the kidneys and liver, so reduced function in either organ could affect how the medicine works. Your doctor needs to know about any kidney or liver conditions before you start taking Misoprost 200 mcg. They'll decide whether to adjust your dose or monitor you more closely. Never change your dose yourself—always follow your doctor's instructions for your specific situation.

What are my options if Misoprost 200 mcg does not agree with me?

If Misoprost 200 mcg doesn't agree with you, talk to your doctor about your options. They may suggest taking a lower dose, spacing doses differently, or taking the tablets with food to reduce stomach upset. Your doctor might also switch you to a different medicine that works similarly but suits you better. Don't stop taking Misoprost without medical advice, as this could affect your treatment. Your doctor will help find the best solution for you.

How does Misoprost 200 mcg compare to other treatments used for the same condition?

Misoprost contains misoprostol, which works by reducing stomach acid and protecting the stomach lining. It's commonly used alongside pain relievers. Other treatments include antacids (which neutralise acid) and H2-blockers or proton pump inhibitors (which reduce acid production differently). Your doctor chooses based on your condition severity, other medicines you take, and how your stomach responds. Some people need combination therapy rather than one medicine alone. Always discuss with your doctor which option suits you best.
