US Brand Name Norvasc Tenormin
Strength 5+50 mg
Generic Name Amlodipine Besilate + Atenolol

Amlodipine Besilate and Atenolol are the main active pharmaceutical ingredients in Amlopres AT 5+20 mg tablets; this combination of drugs is an oral medication used to treat high blood pressure, and prevent stroke, certain heart rhythm and kidney problems.

Amlodipine Besilate is a calcium channel blocker, and Atenolol is a beta blocker drug. Both are used in combination to treat hypertension (lowering of blood pressure) and work by relaxing the heart muscles so that the heart does not have to work hard and allow blood and oxygen to flow more easily to the heart; it may also lower the heart rate.

Amlodipine Besilate is a calcium channel blocker, and Atenolol is a beta blocker; both drugs work by relaxing and widening the blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body and thus increasing the supply of oxygen and blood to the heart. Amlodipine Besilate works by inhibiting the calcium channel that decreases the contractility of smooth muscles of arteries and causes vasodilation that leads to the relaxation of the blood vessel and helps free blood flow to the heart. The other drug, Atenolol, is a beta blocker; it gets bound with the beta receptor in the heart and relaxes the blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and, thus, curing hypertension.
