Acnedap gel 5% contains the active ingredient Dapsone, an antibacterial medicine used for the management of acne vulgaris. The common symptoms of acne include pimples, whiteheads, and blackheads. The product is intended for topical use only and should not be used intravaginally. As an antibacterial agent, Dapsone inhibits certain substances necessary for bacterial growth, thereby preventing bacterial multiplication. Moreover, as an anti-inflammatory agent, it reduces inflammation and helps heal pimples.
Usage instructions of Dapsone gel
Use Acnedap gel 5% as prescribed by the dermatologist. The use of Dapsone gel is applicable for adults and children over 12 years of age. Before applying the gel, wash the areas of the skin where you need to apply it with a mild cleanser or soap. The gel should be applied all over the affected area twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening). Make sure to pat your skin dry with a clean towel gently. A thin layer is usually required to apply to the areas of your skin that have acne.
Generally, a pea-sized amount is enough to cover the affected area. Rub the gel formulation gently and completely till it gets absorbed into the skin. Put the cap back on to the tube and close it tightly. Rinse your hands after application of the product. Don’t let the product come in contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Also, do not swallow the gel. In the event of accidental swallowing of the gel, contact your dermatologist immediately. Do not expect to see an immediate improvement in the appearance of acne, but be patient and continue using this medication as advised by your dermatologist.
If your pimples and associated inflammation do not improve even after regular applications of the Dapsone formulation for twelve weeks, consult your dermatologist about alternative treatments for acne. If an application is missed, it should be applied as soon as you remember. This ensures a consistent amount of medication is used on the skin. However, if the time for the next application is almost near, skip the missed application and follow the regular treatment regimen. Make sure you avoid double applications.
Precautions and warnings with Dapsone gel
Do not use Acnedap 5% if you have a history of hypersensitivity to Dapsone or any of the other ingredients in the medicine. Before using Dapsone formulation, consult your dermatologist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 12 years of age. You should also mention using other products, such as cosmetics or topical medications, that you apply to the skin. Having glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency can also limit the use of Dapsone gel.
Caution is recommended if you have a history of greyish-blue discolouration of the skin, lips, nails, and mucous membranes due to less oxygen in the bloodstream. This condition is medically termed as methemoglobinemia. Co-application with Benzoyl peroxide may cause your skin and facial skin to turn yellow, particularly at the site of application. The use of any product intended for skin application should be discussed with a dermatologist.
Furthermore, it is extremely important to inform your dermatologist of all medications you are using topically or taking orally. This may include prescription and non-prescription medicines, herbal products, and vitamins. Clinical and research trials did not include an adequate number of patients aged 65 years and over to determine whether the population responds differently from younger patients.
Side effects of Dapsone gel
Multiple clinical trials and research studies have demonstrated that Dapsone gel 5% is both effective and safe for treating acne vulgaris. Like all medicines, Acnedap 5% can contribute to side effects. Most side effects associated with the use of Dapsone formulations are usually mild and resolve on their own within a few days.
