Zipsydon 20 mg is an atypical antipsychotic medication. It is a prescription oral treatment used in the following conditions:

     –    Schizophrenia: Symptoms include hallucinations, paranoia, delusions, and becoming withdrawn from family and friends.

     –    Manic or mixed episodes related to bipolar I disorder: Symptoms include extremely irritable mood, restlessness, racing thoughts, easily distracted, and little need for sleep.

     –    Use as maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder as an adjunct to lithium or valproate.

Zipsydon contains the active ingredient Ziprasidone, which is not approved for the treatment of patients with dementia-related psychosis. Older adults with a diagnosis of psychosis related to dementia treated with antipsychotics are at an increased risk of death as compared to individuals who are receiving a sugar pill.

The oral dose should be taken with food and swallowed whole capsule without chewing or crushing it.

     –    Schizophrenia: Initiate treatment with a 20 mg dose twice a day. The daily dose may be adjusted as advised by the health care provider.

     –    Treatment of manic or manic episodes of bipolar I disorder: The usual recommended dose is 40 mg twice a day. The daily dose may subsequently be adjusted based on the individual’s patient’s condition.

If you continue to take Zipsydon 20 mg, there is less chance of recurrence of symptoms. Do not stop taking the capsule even if you feel better without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.

Zipsydon 20 mg is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the medicine. It should not be given in patients with acute myocardial infarction and uncompensated heart failure. You should be cautious while using this medication as it may increase the risk of developing diabetes, so it is better to monitor glucose levels regularly. Let your healthcare specialist know if you develop any unusual changes in mood or behavior, depression, or suicidal thoughts.

The safety and effectiveness in children under 18 years have not been established. In patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment, a lower dose should be considered.

Do not take Ziprasidone if you are currently taking medications that should not be taken in combination with Ziprasidone, for example chlorpromazine, pimozide, thioridazine, mefloquine, halofantrine,  pentamidine, arsenic trioxide, gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin, dolasetron mesylate, pentamidine, levomethadyl acetate, or tacrolimus.

Some commonly reported side effects of Zipsydon 20 mg include nausea, headache, abnormal vision, vomiting, and dystonia (involuntary muscle contraction). Initially, this medication causes a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially when you change positions; therefore, standing slowly from a lying or a sitting position is advised. Ziprasidone also causes dizziness and sleepiness, so avoid driving or doing anything that requires your complete attention.
