Xafinact 50 mg is prescribed widely for motor problems (malfunctions of the nervous system that cause involuntary or uncontrollable movements of the body) in Parkinson’s disease. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include tremors, rigidity, stiffness, speech difficulty, and difficulty in walking and coordinating balance. Xafinact contains Safinamide, which increases the concentration of a certain chemical called dopamine in the brain called dopamine which plays a major in movement control, hence reducing these symptoms.
Xafinact is suitable for once dosing with or without food. Lower doses are recommended for patients with moderate liver impairment, but Xafinact is contraindicated in patients with severe impairment. This anti-Parkinson’s drug can be taken alone or with other medicines. It is advised to take this medicine at the same time each day as this helps to maintain a consistent level of the medicine in the body. It is suggested to reduce or completely avoid the consumption of high-protein diets such as meat, poultry, and dairy products. Do not discontinue treatment without speaking to your doctor; it may result in stiff muscles, confusion, and a high fever.
If you are known to be allergic to Safinamide or any other medicine, please tell your doctor. It would help if you also let your doctor know of all other medicines you are taking as they affect the mode of action of Safinamide, or safinamide may affect the working mechanism of other medications. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is advised to inform your doctor before taking the medicine. Xafinact should be used with caution in patients with schizophrenia (a mental condition that causes impaired thinking, loss of interest in life, and unusual emotions), bipolar disorder (mood changes or depression), or if you have insomnia or uncontrolled blood pressure. Let your doctor know if you develop hallucinations or other changes in your behaviour.
Some common side effects of Xafinact 50 mg include indigestion, depression, cough, joint pain, and insomnia. Most of the side effects of this antiparkinson’s drug do not require medical help and gradually resolve over time. Its regular use causes sleepiness and dizziness, so avoid driving or doing anything that requires medical attention until you know how this anti-Parkinson drug affects you.
