Active Ingredient Entecavir

X-Vir is a prescription antiviral tablet used to treat chronic (long-term) hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults and adolescents aged 2 years and older. It is effective for HBV with active viral replication and evidence of persistent liver inflammation. This medicine can be given to people with compensated liver disease (whose liver is damaged but still functions properly) and decompensated liver disease (whose liver is damaged and unable to function properly).

In children, X-Vir tablets can be effectively used in patients with compensated liver disease. Infection caused by the hepatitis B virus can contribute to liver damage. The active ingredient of the medicine is Entecavir, which works by reducing the amount of virus in your body, helping to reduce liver inflammation, liver damage and improving the condition of the liver. X-Vir tablets are not a cure for HBV, but it has the potential to control the infection and lower the risk of damage to the liver when used under medical supervision.

Usage instructions – Entecavir tablet

Not all patients require the same dose of X-Vir medicine. For adults, the usual recommended dose is either 0.5mg or 1 mg once daily. Generally, the dose will depend on whether you have been previously treated for hepatitis B and the medications you have taken. Your healthcare specialist may usually start treatment with a lower dose or instruct you to take the tablets less often than once a day based on the condition of your liver.

It is always recommended to take the dose prescribed by your healthcare expert to ensure that the antiviral medication is fully effective and to minimise the development of resistance to the antiviral treatment. Moreover, take the tablets only for the prescribed period. For children and adolescents, 0.5 mg tablets are available. For children, the dose is typically based on their weight. Please consult a healthcare professional to know the right dose for your child.

In most cases, you can take X-Vir tablets with or without food. Some patients must take these tablets on an empty stomach. If you have also been prescribed Entecavir tablets, take them at least an hour after a meal and at least 2 hours before your next meal.

Do not discontinue treatment without consulting your healthcare professional. When your treatment is stopped, your condition may need to be evaluated at regular intervals, and you should undergo blood tests for several months. Taking Entecavir tablets for hepatitis B infection will not stop you from infecting other people with the same virus. Therefore, it is important to take measures to prevent the spread of HBV to others. A vaccine is generally available to protect individuals at high risk of contracting the hepatitis B virus. For those who are unable to swallow the tablet or for whom dose reduction is advised, other entecavir-containing medicines with more suitable preparations may be available.

Things to remember with Entecavir tablet

Do not take X-Vir 0.5mg if you have a history of hypersensitivity reaction to Entecavir or any of the other ingredients of the medicine. Consult your healthcare specialist before taking Entecavir tablets if you have a history of kidney problems, as the antiviral medication is primarily eliminated from your body through the kidneys. Thus, your dose needs to be adjusted. If you are infected with HIV, be sure to inform your healthcare specialist. This is because you should not take X-Vir tablets for HBV treatment unless you are receiving HIV medicines at the same time. Taking medicines for HBV treatment may reduce the effectiveness of HIV medicines. Etecavir tablets may increase the amount of lactic acid in the blood and cause liver enlargement. Signs of lactic acidosis include nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Entecavir tablets should not be used in children under 2 years of age or those weighing less than 10kg.

Side effects of the Entecavir tablet

Like all medications, Entecavir X-Vir 0.5mg may cause side effects, although not everybody who consumes it gets side effects. Patients treated with Entecavir medicine reported common side effects such as dizziness, headache, insomnia, fatigue, somnolence, diarrhoea, nausea, indigestion, and increased blood levels of liver enzymes. The adverse effects experienced by children and adolescents are similar to those in adults. The commonly reported include low levels of neutrophils. If you develop any side effects, inform your healthcare specialist straight away.
