Volibo M contains two oral antihyperglycemic drugs, Voglibose and metformin hydrochloride, used to manage type 2 diabetes. Voglibose inhibits the activity of alpha-glucosidase in the intestine, thereby delaying the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, resulting in the improvement of postprandial hyperglycemia. At the same time, the mechanism of action of metformin hydrochloride is to reduce fasting glucose and improve insulin sensitivity by increasing glucose uptake and utilization. Hence, the combination complements each other to provide better glycaemic control in managing type 2 diabetes and may help prevent its associated complications.

Volibo M is used in combination with diet as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes who are already treated with a combination of Voglibose and metformin given separately or whose diabetes is not adequately controlled with metformin alone or for those patients who have responded to voglibose therapy initially and require additional glycaemic control.

Dosage should be individualized based on both effectiveness and tolerance. The recommended dose is one tablet Volibo M thrice daily before each meal. In case of inadequate effect, your doctor may increase your daily dose under close observation of the course of the disease. You should keep taking medicine even if you feel well or your blood sugar levels are controlled. If you discontinue treatment without consulting your doctor, your blood sugar levels could increase your risk of kidney damage, nerve problems, blindness, and loss of limbs.

Volibo M should not be used in patients with the following conditions:

    — Renal dysfunction

    — Known hypersensitivity to metformin, Voglibose, or any other components of the medicine

    — Severe infection, before and after surgery or with serious trauma

    — Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis

    — Patients with a gastrointestinal obstruction or predisposed to it

Certain drugs may interact with Volibo M, and these include:

    — Danazol

    — Nifedipine

    — Salicylates

    — Furosemide

    — Thiazide

    — Others such as enalapril, insulin, acarbose, fluconazole, sulphonamides, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents

Volibo M can cause side effects like nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea, flatulence, skin rash, loss of appetite, and taste change. However, these side effects are temporary and usually resolve on their own. If these do not disappear or worry you, contact your doctor. Your doctor might recommend ways of dealing with your side effects or treating them if they are bothersome.
