Rivofonet 300mg contains the active substance Tenofovir disoproxil. The active substance is an antiretroviral which is used to treat HIV or HBV infection or both. Tenofovir is an NRTI (nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor) and works by interfering with the normal working of an enzyme required for the viruses to reproduce themselves.

You must always take medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Talk to your doctor if you are not sure about the correct dose of the medicine. For adults, the usual dose is one 300 mg tablet a day. If you have kidney problems, your doctor may tell you to take the antiretroviral medicine less often. For children two years of age and older, your doctor will prescribe the right dose of the medicine based on your child’s weight. Let your doctor know if your child has problems with swallowing tablets.

Before taking Rivofonet, tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including liver problems, kidney impairment, bone problems, or HIV infection. Your doctor should also be aware of your pregnancy status; if you are pregnant or planning to conceive. You should tell your doctor if you become pregnant during treatment with Rivofonet. Also, do not breastfeed if you have HIV-1 because of the risk of passing the life-threatening infection to your baby. Let your doctor know of all the medicines you have been using, including prescription, non-prescription, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Some medicines may interact with Tenofovir and affect the working of Tenofovir. Ask your doctor about the full list of medicines that can interact with Rivofonet. Make sure you consult a doctor before starting a new medicine. Your doctor can tell you if it is safe to take Tenofovir formulation with other medicine or not.

Rivofonet may cause serious side effects, including:

• Changes in your immune system. You may develop a stronger immune system that begins to fight the infection creating health complications for a long time. Let your doctor know if you begin to have new symptoms after starting your HIV drug. 
• Excessive production of lactic acid is rare but a serious emergency in patients receiving Tenofovir formulation. 

Other common side effects include headache, nausea, depression, sleeping problems, rash, tiredness, diarrhoea, abdomen pain, decreased weight, and depression.
