Pilomax 5 mg (Pilocarpine) — Trusted Generic Salagen

Pilomax 5 mg contains the active substance Pilocarpine hydrochloride, categorized under the class of drugs known as cholinergic agents. It is prescribed for treating the symptoms of Xerostomia (dry mouth) due to salivary gland hypofunction caused by radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Pilocarpine is also used to treat symptoms of Xerostomia (dry mouth) and Xerophthalmia (dry eyes) in patients with Sjogren’s syndrome.

Treatment with Pilomax 5 mg should start at the first signs of Xerostomia. Clinical experience indicated that administering Pilocarpine tablets improve the relief of Xerostomia/Xerophthalmia. Use of this medicine at the above-recommended dosage for 12 or more weeks may be required before relief can be expected. Onset and degree of relief may vary from person to person. Tablets may be taken before or after consuming food. Do not bite or chew the tablet. Patients with mild and moderate liver disease should start treatment at a reduced daily dosage, gradually increasing the dosage to 5 mg three to four times daily as safety and tolerability allow. No data is available for any dose of Pilocarpine in patients with severe liver disease. Therefore, Pilomax is not recommended in patients with severe hepatic insufficiency. However, clinical assistance is necessary; the drug should be cautiously used. Also, caution should be observed this medicine is to be administered to patients with a kidney disorder.

The usual dose for initial treatment is 5 mg three or four times daily. The dose may be increased to two tablets daily; not exceeding six tablets per day may be considered for patients who have not responded adequately and can tolerate the lower doses. The lowest tolerated and effective dose should be used as a maintenance dose.

Pilomax 5 mg is contraindicated in patients with uncontrolled asthma and known sensitivity to Pilocarpine or any of the product’s ingredients. The safety and effectiveness of Pilomax 5 mg have not been established in children under 18 years of age. Pilocarpine is not recommended in women of childbearing potential not using contraception. Talk to your doctor before you take Pilocarpine if you have any lung problems, gallstones, kidney problems, mental problems, serious heart problems, and eye problems. If you sweat excessively during Pilocarpine, drink more fluids; if you cannot drink adequate fluids, contact your doctor, as you may suffer from dehydration and organ damage if this continues. It is important to talk to your doctor if you take medicines for diarrhoea, beta-blockers to treat high blood pressure, blood pressure-lowering drugs, and medicines to prevent blood clotting.

Pilomax 5 mg can cause side effects like all medicines, although not everybody gets them. Common side effects of the medicine include sweating,  flu-like symptoms, headache and the need to pass urine more frequently, runny nose, weakness, chills, diarrhoea, constipation, flushing, palpitations, watery eyes, indigestion, abdominal pain, allergic reactions including itching and rash.

What is Pilomax 5 mg used for?

Pilomax 5 mg contains pilocarpine, a medicine that stimulates fluid production in your body. It's used to treat dry mouth (xerostomia) caused by radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, or by Sjögren's syndrome (an autoimmune condition [a disease where the immune system attacks the body's own tissues] that damages moisture-producing glands). It's also used to treat dry eyes and glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye that can damage vision). Pilomax works by triggering your salivary and tear glands to produce more moisture, relieving dryness and discomfort.

Who is Pilomax 5 mg meant for, and is it right for me?

Pilomax 5 mg contains pilocarpine (a medicine that stimulates saliva and tear production). It's prescribed for people with dry mouth or dry eyes caused by Sjögren's syndrome (an autoimmune condition) or cancer treatment. Your doctor decides if it's right for you based on your medical history, current medicines, and kidney or heart function. Never start or stop Pilomax without consulting your doctor first. Only they can confirm whether this medicine suits your specific condition.

Should I take Pilomax 5 mg with food, and does the time of day matter?

You can take Pilomax with or without food — food does not affect how well the medicine works. However, taking it at the same time each day helps you remember your dose and keeps the medicine level steady in your body. Choose a time that fits your routine, whether morning or evening. If your doctor has given you specific instructions about timing, follow those instead.

How much Pilomax 5 mg should I take, and how often?

Your doctor will determine your dose and how often you take Pilomax 5 mg based on your condition and individual needs. Pilocarpine tablets are typically taken two to four times daily, but your specific dosing schedule may differ. Always follow the instructions on your prescription label or from your doctor exactly. Do not change your dose without speaking to your doctor first. If you're unsure about when or how much to take, contact your pharmacy or healthcare provider.

Is Pilomax 5 mg suitable for long-term use, or is it a short-term treatment?

Pilomax 5 mg can be used for long-term treatment of dry mouth caused by Sjögren's syndrome or radiation therapy, or for glaucoma [increased pressure in the eye]. However, your doctor will determine the right duration for your specific condition. Some patients benefit from continuous use, while others may take it short-term. Never stop taking Pilomax without consulting your doctor, as this could allow your condition to worsen. Your doctor will regularly review whether you still need it and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

How quickly will I notice Pilomax 5 mg working?

Pilomax (pilocarpine) typically begins working within 30 minutes to 1 hour after you take it. You may notice effects like increased saliva production, sweating, or changes in vision relatively quickly. However, the full benefit for your specific condition may take several days of regular use. If you don't notice improvement after a few days, contact your doctor—they may adjust your dose or timing.

Can Pilomax 5 mg cause an allergic reaction, and what should I look for?

Yes, Pilomax can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Watch for signs including skin rash, itching, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness. If you experience any of these symptoms after taking Pilomax, stop taking it immediately and seek emergency medical help or contact your doctor right away. Tell your doctor before starting Pilomax if you've had allergic reactions to pilocarpine (the active ingredient) or other medicines. Most people tolerate Pilomax well, but allergic reactions require prompt medical attention.

Are there any serious warning signs I should watch out for with Pilomax 5 mg?

Yes, stop taking Pilomax and seek immediate medical help if you experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, fainting, or vision problems. Also watch for signs of low blood pressure like weakness or confusion. Call your doctor right away if you develop muscle weakness, excessive sweating, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms may indicate your body is reacting too strongly to the medicine. Never stop taking Pilomax without speaking to your doctor first, as they need to adjust your dose safely.

Which medicines should I avoid while using Pilomax 5 mg?

Pilomax (pilocarpine) can interact with certain medicines. Avoid using it with anticholinergic drugs (medicines that block nerve signals), as they reduce pilocarpine's effectiveness. Beta-blockers (heart and blood pressure medicines) may increase side effects like dizziness. Some glaucoma medicines work against pilocarpine. Always tell your doctor about all medicines you take—including over-the-counter drugs and supplements—before starting Pilomax. Your doctor will check for dangerous interactions and adjust your treatment if needed. Never stop or change any medicine without consulting your doctor.

Can vitamins or herbal remedies interfere with Pilomax 5 mg?

Some vitamins and herbal remedies may interact with Pilomax. Anticholinergic herbs like scopolia or jimsonweed can reduce Pilomax effectiveness. High-dose vitamin supplements, particularly B vitamins, may affect how your body processes pilocarpine (the active ingredient that stimulates moisture production). Always tell your doctor about all vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you take before starting Pilomax. Do not stop or change any supplements without consulting your doctor first, as this could affect your treatment.

Is Pilomax 5 mg safe to take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Pilomax 5 mg has not been adequately studied in pregnant women, so safety during pregnancy is uncertain. You should not take this medicine while pregnant unless your doctor specifically advises it. If you are breastfeeding, pilocarpine passes into breast milk and may affect your baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding before taking Pilomax. Your doctor can discuss the risks and benefits for your situation and suggest alternatives if needed.

Are there any groups of people who should be extra careful when using Pilomax 5 mg?

Yes, certain groups need extra care with Pilomax. If you have heart problems, asthma, or chronic lung disease, tell your doctor before taking it—pilocarpine can affect your breathing and heart rate. People with stomach ulcers or kidney disease should also use caution. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, discuss this with your doctor first. Older adults may need dose adjustments. Always inform your doctor about all your conditions and medicines before starting Pilomax.

Which strength of Pilomax 5 mg is most commonly recommended?

Pilomax 5 mg is the standard strength most commonly recommended for treating dry eye symptoms and glaucoma (high eye pressure). Your doctor will prescribe this strength based on your specific condition and how your eyes respond to treatment. Some patients may need a different dose, so follow your doctor's instructions for the strength that's right for you.

What should I discuss with my doctor before starting Pilomax 5 mg?

Before taking Pilomax 5 mg, tell your doctor if you have heart problems, asthma, chronic bronchitis, stomach ulcers, or kidney disease. Mention any allergies to pilocarpine (a medicine that stimulates saliva and tear production). Let your doctor know about all other medicines you take, as pilocarpine can interact with certain drugs. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, discuss this with your doctor. Also mention if you wear contact lenses, as pilocarpine affects vision temporarily.
