Strength 600 mg
Generic Name Efavirenz

Efavir 600 mg fights the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by reducing the amount of virus in the bloodstream. It contains the active ingredient Efavirenz, categorized as antiretroviral medicines called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It is effective for adults, adolescents, children three months of age and older and weighing at least 3.5 kg. Your doctor will prescribe Efavirenz only if you have an HIV infection. When taken in combination with other antiretroviral medicines, the medicine reduces the amount of the virus in the bloodstream. Reducing the viral load strengthens your immune system and reduces the risk of developing life-threatening complications associated with the infection.

The recommended dose for adults is Efavir 600 mg once per day. The dose may need to be increased or decreased if you are also taking other antiretroviral drugs. The antiviral drug is for oral administration. Take Efavir tablets on an empty stomach, preferably before bedtime. This reduces the risk of side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness. Swallow the tablet with water an hour before two hours after a meal. It should be taken every as prescribed by the doctor. The antiviral drug should never be used alone to treat HIV. Take it always in combination with other anti-HIV medicines. The medicine may not be suitable for children weighing less than 40 kg. The recommended dose for adults and children is 600 mg once daily.

Do not take Efavir 600 mg if you are allergic to Efavirenz or any other medicine components, have liver disorders, heart conditions, low levels of electrolytes, or if you are currently taking any other medications. Inform your doctor, especially if you are taking medicines to treat allergy symptoms, heart disease, heartburn, certain medical conditions, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, migraine, antimalarial, or antifungal agents. Efavir must be taken in combination with other medicines that are effective against HIV infection. You can still pass the virus even while receiving the medication, although the risk is lowered by effective antiretroviral therapy. Ask your doctor for precautions needed to avoid infecting other people. The antiviral drug is not a cure for HIV infection, and you may continue to have the infection and other complications associated with the medicine.  Inform your doctor if you have a history of mental illness or have suicidal thoughts. Let your doctor know if you have a history of liver disease, convulsions, or heart disorder. Once you are taking Efavir 600 mg, look for signs of sleeping problems, difficulty concentrating, drowsiness, dizziness, abnormal dreaming, or skin rash.

During HIV therapy, there may be an increase in weight and blood lipid and glucose levels. Your doctor will test you for these changes. The most common side effect of the medicine is skin rash and nervous system problems. You should consult your doctor if you develop a rash since some rashes may be serious; however, in most cases, the rash disappears without any changes in the antiretroviral therapy.
