Efavir is available as capsules for oral administration containing 200 mg of Efavirenz, a non-nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). It is effective only against RNA viruses such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).Â
Efavir is used with other HIV medicines to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults and children above 3 years of age. This drug must not be used alone as it can cause the virus to develop resistance. Therefore, it is combined with two other medicines to treat the condition. The treatment is referred to as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). It is meant to decrease the virus's ability to multiply and prevent the development of any resistance to treatment. HIV affects the immune system by attacking certain immune cells known as CD4+ cells, which typically fight infection. Also, when many CD4+ cells are attacked, this can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The medicine works to reduce the ability of HIV to multiply and spread. It keeps a check on the amount of virus. This leads to an increase in CD4+ cells, which in turn leads to a recovery of the immune system and reduces the risk of disease progression.
