Strength Eye drop of 0.005% (2.5 ml)
Generic Name Latanoprost
Manufacturer Pfizer, Belgium

Xalatan eye drop 0.005% (2.5ml) eye drop is used to treat increased pressure in the eye caused by ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma. Both eye conditions cause high pressure within the eye, known as intraocular pressure, which may lead to eye pain and harm your vision. Latanoprost is the main active pharmaceutical ingredient in the ophthalmic solution that treats intraocular pressure, that is, the pressure within the eye due to open-angle glaucoma. Latanoprost is quite similar to a natural chemical in the body called prostaglandins, which regulates fluid flow within the eyes, lowering eye pressure and preventing blindness due to glaucoma. This drug is indicated for the reduction of increased pressure within the eye.

The recommended dose of Xalatan is one drop once daily in the evening in the affected eye. The drug should be taken as directed by your doctor. Xalatan 0.005% (2.5ml) eye drop should be taken through an ocular route that is through the eye. Always shake the bottle well before use and slowly instil these medicines drop by drop; it is recommended to gently close the eyes for one to two minutes after the administration, and do not allow the dropper tip of the bottle to touch the eye.

  — Xalatan eye drops should not be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to any ingredients present in the formulation.

  — This drug is not suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women

  — This Eye drop is not suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers

Talk to your ophthalmologist before using Latanoprost eye drops if you think  any of the following  apply to you:

  — If you have or ever had eye surgery

  — If you suffer from eye problems such as eye irritation, eye pain, inflammation, or blurred vision

  — If you suffer from dry eyes

  — If you have severe asthma symptoms or the asthma is not well controlled

  — If you wear contact lenses. You can still use this ophthalmic solution, but follow your ophthalmologist’s advice.

  — If you suffer from a viral infection of the eye caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV)

Like all medicated ophthalmic solutions, Xalatan eye drops can cause side effects; not everybody who uses the solution gets them. The common side effects of using Latanoprost eye drops are:

  — Redness of the eye

  — A change in your eye colour by increasing the amount of brown pigment in the iris (coloured part of the eye). Any change in the eye colour may take years to develop, although these changes normally appear within eight months of treatment. In some cases, the colour change may be more noticeable if you use Xalatan eye drops in one eye. The change does not continue after the treatment is stopped.

  — Eye irritation

If you get any side effects, talk to your ophthalmologist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this information guide.
