Aldactone 25 mg is prescribed as add on therapy for the treatment of hypertension to lower blood pressure in patients who are not adequately by other agents. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of severe cardiovascular events such as strokes and myocardial infarction. The active ingredient of the medicine is Spironolactone, which belongs to a group of medicines known as potassium-sparing diuretics, which allow you to lose excess fluid from your body. Spironolactone is FDA approved for the treatment of heart failure with hypertension and edema secondary to cirrhosis.  This may be used for patients with congestive heart failure, nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disease), liver cirrhosis with fluid retention, malignant ascites (a cancerous condition with swelling of the abdomen), and treatment of a condition where the excess hormone is produced. Children must be treated with Spironolactone under the guidance of medical supervision.  

Always take Aldactone tablets exactly as your doctor has told you. Discuss with your doctor if you are not sure about the correct usage of the medicine. How often you need to take the drug usually depends on your illness. Take the tablet once daily with food. The adult dosage varies, depending on patient’s condition. If you are not sure how much to take, please speak to your doctor. In elderly patients, doctors prescribe a low dose and gradually increase the dosage required to obtain the desired effects. If you give Spironolactone tabs to a child, the number of tablets will depend on the child’s weight.

Do not take Aldactone tablets 25 mg if you are allergic to Spironolactone or any other medicine ingredients. Avoid taking the drug if you have Addison’s disease, severe kidney disease, high blood levels of potassium, water tablets, or eplerenone.

Concomitant use of Aldactone with potassium supplements that can increase the potassium level in the bloodstream may lead to severe hyperkalemia. Patients are advised to discontinue potassium supplementation in heart failure who begin Spironolactone therapy. Medicines that can increase the level of potassium in the blood include Angiotensin receptor blockers, non-steroidal receptor blockers, heparin and ACE inhibitors.

Children with moderate to severe kidney disease must take Spironolactone tablets.

Let your doctor know before taking Aldactone if you have severe heart failure, severe illness, too much acid in the body, abnormal periods or swollen breasts, have been passing a small amount of urine, liver cirrhosis, severe heart failure, have abnormal periods or swollen breasts, and electrolyte imbalance in your blood.  

The side effects associated with the use of Aldactone 25 mg include:

• Digestive system disorders- gastritis, cramping, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, ulceration, gastric bleeding
• Hypersensitivity- urticaria, fever, anaphylactic reactions, vasculitis
• Nervous system issues- dizziness, headache, ataxia, drowsiness, headache, mental confusion
• Renal problems- renal dysfunction
• Liver problems- hepatocellular toxicity
• Musculoskeletal- Leg cramps
• Skin problems- Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, alopecia, toxic epidermal necrolysis, pruritis

Discontinue treatment and contact your doctor any of these become troublesome or persist for a longer duration.
