Onglyza 5 mg is a prescription medicine combined with diet and exercise to control high blood sugar in adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains the active ingredient saxagliptin, which helps the body increases insulin levels after meals.

Take Onglyza 5mg tablet orally once daily as directed by your doctor. Do not change the dose without speaking to your doctor. Onglyza tablets can be taken before or after consuming food. During periods of stress on the body, such as trauma, fever, infection, or surgery. Contact your doctor immediately, as your medications may need to be changed. Follow your doctor’s instructions for treating episodes of hypoglycaemia (too low blood sugar). Speak to your doctor if low blood sugar is a problem for you.

Do not take Onglyza 5 mg if you are allergic to any ingredients in the medicine. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction to Saxagliptin may include the following:

   — Difficulty with swallowing and breathing

   — Raised, red areas appeared on your skin

   — Itching, skin rash, flaking or peeling

   — Swelling of your face, lips, throat, and other areas

Stop taking Onglyza and immediately contact your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms.

Onglyza 5 mg is not for those who have Type 1 diabetes. It is not for people with diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition with an increased ketone in your blood or urine. The risk of hypoglycaemia is higher if you take Onglyza with other diabetes medicines, such as insulin or sulfonylurea. If you have had pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), it is unknown if you have a higher chance of getting pancreatitis while taking Saxagliptin. It is unknown whether this antidiabetic agent is safe and effective in children younger than 18.

Before you take Saxagliptin, tell your doctor if:

   — You have kidney problems

   — About your pregnancy, or if you plan to become pregnant or a breastfeeding mom. Saxagliptin may be passed into breast milk. Discuss with your doctor how to feed your baby while taking this antidiabetic agent.

Inform your doctor of all the medications, including prescription, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Common side effects of Onglyza 5 mg include headache, urinary tract infection and upper respiratory tract infection. Low blood sugar or hypoglycaemia may worsen in people who take another medication to treat diabetes, such as insulin or sulfonylurea. Tell your doctor if you take any other antidiabetic agent. If you develop symptoms of low blood sugar, you should check with your doctor and treat it if it is too low. Signs of hypoglycaemia include headache, sweating, change in vision, rapid heartbeat, shaking, hunger, hunger, and mood changes. Saxagliptin can cause serious side effects, including an allergic reaction and joint pain that can be severe. These are not all the side effects of the medicine. Tell your doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not resolve within a few days.
