Etoricoxib is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory agent that relieves the inflammatory symptoms like:

It is a drug that prescribes in rheumatoid arthritis, painful menstrual periods, short term pain experienced during injuries, surgery and conditions that last for a limited time. It belongs to the class of COX- 2 inhibitors and stops the production of inflammatory mediators that causes pain and inflammation. This is one of the most preferred drugs in mild to severe inflammatory conditions.

Understanding the drug Etoricoxib:

How it works?

Etoricoxib is a selective COX 2 (cyclooxygenase 2) enzyme inhibitor. It selectively gets bind to the enzyme receptor and stops the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin (PG’s) which is the precursors of inflammatory mediators. Prostaglandins are the chemicals that produce inflammatory response like pain, fever, swelling and tenderness. Etoricoxib stops the inflammation and gives symptomatic treatment.

When should you avoid it?

You should not take Etoricoxib if you:

  • Are allergic to Etoricoxib
  • Are prone to allergies
  • Have heart associated problems like heart attack, stroke and hypertension
  • Have stomach ulcers
  • Have bleeding disorders
  • Have kidney related problems
  • Have liver disease
  • Are suffering from asthma
  • are pregnant or planning to become a pregnant

How much to take?

The usual recommended dose intake ranges from 60 mg to 120 mg and it can be increased or decreased depending upon the patient’s response. Take the dose as prescribed by the Doctor.

How to take?

Etoricoxib is taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet with full glass of water.  Do not halve the tablet. Try to take the medicine at same time daily as it reduces the chances of missing a dose.

When to take?

The timings of the dose intake are decided by the doctor and this medicine can be taken with or without meal. The dose intake depends upon your condition. Always take the medicine as per prescription.

For how long should it be taken?

This medicine gives a symptomatic treatment so it does not cure the underlying cause of the condition. Continue taking medicine as long as doctor recommends you. Always ask the doctor before stopping the intake of the drug.

What if you take too much (overdose)?
