Neksium 40 mg is a prescription medicine containing the active ingredient Esomeprazole magnesium, a proton pump inhibitor. It reduces the amount of acid in your stomach. Neksium is used in adults:
— For 4 to 8 weeks to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Neksium also helps to heal acid-related damage to the lining of the oesophagus and to help continue this healing. GERD happens when acid in the stomach backs up into the oesophagus, a tube that joins your mouth to your stomach. This may bring a burning feeling in your chest or throat, burping, or a sour taste.
— For up to six months, to lower the risk of stomach ulcers in some people taking pain medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
— To treat people with a stomach infections with antibiotics, clarithromycin and amoxicillin.
— For long-term conditions where your stomach makes an excessive amount of acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is a rare disorder in which the stomach releases more acid than normal.
For children and adolescents one to 17 years of age, Esomeprazole may be given for up to eight weeks for short-term treatment of GERD. Neksium 40 is only prescribed to treat GERD with acid-related damage to the oesophagus for up to six weeks in children ages one month to less than a year.
