Nexium is effective as a short-term treatment in the healing of erosive esophagitis. It is usually recommended for 4 to 8 weeks for providing symptomatic relief. Those patients who have not healed even after 4 to 8 weeks of treatment, an additional course of this proton pump inhibitor may be considered.
For controlling symptoms and healing of erosive esophagitis, Esomeprazole helps to maintain symptomatic relief and healing of erosive esophagitis. The medicine is indicated for the treatment of heartburn and other symptoms associated with GERD.
Neksium is also considered to reduce the occurrence of gastric ulcers associated with continuous use of NSAIDs in patients with a high risk of developing gastric ulcers. Elderly patients are at high risk.
Doctors may recommend Esomeprazole in combination with other pharmaceutical agents such as clarithromycin and amoxicillin for the treatment of individuals with H. pylori infection. Elimination of H. Pylori infection has been shown to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer.
Take Neksium 20 mg in dose and strength as advised by your doctor. The medicine comes in the form of a tablet, swallow it whole with a glass full of water. Do not break or chew the tablet. Take the pill on an empty stomach. The dosage of this gastrointestinal medicine is decided by your doctor based on your age, the severity of the condition, as well as your medical history. Usually, the delayed-release tablet should be taken at least an hour before meals. Make sure you follow your doctor’s instructions while taking medicine. Keep in mind that the medicine is processed in the liver; if you are suffering from liver disease, your body will not be able to process it well, which leads to the building of Esomeprazole. Therefore, it is important for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers to first consult a doctor before taking medicine. Alcohol does not interfere with the medicine; however, it is best to refrain from drinking excess alcohol. Sometimes, Esomeprazole may make you feel dizzy, so avoid driving kif you observe symptoms such as a change in vision or dizziness.
Neksium 20 mg may not be safe during pregnancy. However, there is limited clinical evidence to show harmful effects on the developing baby. It should not be given to patients with known hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole or any component of the formulation. The use of clarithromycin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitive to any antibiotic drug. Concomitant use of clarithromycin with pimozide is contraindicated. Also, avoid taking amoxicillin if you are hypersensitive to penicillin.
Most side effects of Neksium 20 mg do not require any medical attention, and most of them usually resolve on their own. Consult your doctor if they persist for a longer duration, or you are concerned about them. Some commonly reported side effects of the drug are nausea, constipation, headache, dryness in the mouth, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, flatulence, etc.
