Description of the drug
Ivabradine is used for symptomatic management of angina pectoris. Angina pectoris is the sensation of chest pain or pressure. This occurs due to decreased oxygen supply to the heart muscle or spasm of the coronary arteries. Angina pectoris may result due to anemia, heart failure, but its main cause is coronary heart disease. Ivabradine is prescribed when traditional beta-blockers and calcium-channel blockers alone can not provide relief. It can also be used in combination with these drugs to provide maximum relief.
Indications and Usage
Ivabradine is used for patients who are experiencing worsening heart failure with stable chronic heart failure, whose resting heart rate is more than 70 beats per minute, in whom beta-blockers are not producing desired effects, or in whom beta-blockers are contraindicated.
Dosage and Administration
1. Recommended dose:
This drug is recommended to be taken at a dosage of 5 mg twice daily with meals. The dosage at which the heart rate is 50-60 beats per minute is to be maintained. If the heart rate lowers below 50 beats per minute the dose should be decreased to 2.5 mg twice daily. If the heart rate is above 60 beats per minute, the dose should be increased to 7.5 mg twice a day. Consult you doctor before consuming this drug according to your history of heart-related problems. Heart rate should be assessed regularly during the course of medication.
2. Method of Administration:
The medicine is to be taken orally with meals.
3. Missed dose:
Take the dose as soon as you remember. Do not take the dose if it is time for next scheduled dose.
An accidental overdose may result in bradycardia, i.e., decreased heart rate. Seek immediate medical help in case of an overdose.
