Oxitan is an anticancer drug used with other anticancer medicines called fluorouracil and leucovorin to treat large bowel cancer (stage colon cancer after complete resection of the primary tumour, metastatic colon cancer) and rectum. The active ingredient of this medicine for infusion is Oxaliplatin. It works by stopping or slowing down the growth of cancer cells.

Cancer of the colon and rectum, also known as colorectal cancer or bowel cancer, develops from two parts of the large intestine, namely, the colon or rectum. In this type of cancer, the person may notice symptoms such as changes in bowel movements, fatigue, and weight loss. Oxitan infusion lowers the risk of developing further cancerous growths and bowel cancer. It destroys or stops the growth of cancer cells and prevents their multiplication. Oxaliplatin is an effective yet very toxic medicine, and you should discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Your doctor will inject this medicine. Please do not self-administer. Oxitan 100mg/50ml is given as an injection into a vein by a doctor or a qualified medical professional. Your doctor will decide the appropriate dose and how often you need it. The dose usually depends on what you are being treated for and may change from time to time. You should take this anticancer drug exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Using it in the wrong way or using too much can cause very serious side effects.

It may take several weeks or months to see or feel the benefits but do not stop treatment unless your doctor advises you.

You should not be given Oxitan or infusion if:

  • You should not be given Oxiplatin or any other ingredients of the medicine the Oxiplatin,
  • you already have a reduced number of blood cells.
  • You have a severe kidney problem
  • You already have tingling and numbness in the fingers and have trouble performing delicate tasks such as buttoning clothes.

Oxaliplatin should not be used in children and adolescents below 18.

Talk to your doctor before taking Oxiplatin for infusion:

Tell your doctor if you are using other medications, including salicylates, paclitaxel, granisetron, 5-fluorouracil, sodium valproate, or erythromycin.

Most side effects of Oxitan 100 mg/ 50 ml do not require medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the anticancer drug. Speak to your doctor if they persist for longer or if you are worried about them. Common side effects of Oxitan are fatigue, vomiting, nausea, anaemia, low blood platelets, stomatitis, increased liver enzymes, and decreased white blood cell count. Diarrhoea, tingling and numbness of feet and hands. The anticancer drug may cause some allergic reaction; let your doctor know if you notice sore lips or mouth ulcers, breathing difficulty, itching rash, or mouth ulcers. Regular blood tests are required to check your blood cells, liver, heart, and uric acid levels.
