Oxitan 50mg/10ml is an anticancer drug available in the form of injection. The active ingredient is Oxaliplatin. It is used with anticancer medicines called 5-fluorouracil and Leucovorin to treat people with the following condition:

  • Stage III colon cancer after surgery to remove the tumour
  • Advanced-stage colorectal cancer

Oxitan, when combined with infusional 5-fluorouracil and Leucovorin, was shown to lower the chance of colon cancer returning when prescribed to patients with stage III colon cancer after surgery to remove the tumour. The anticancer drug also increases survival in patients with stage III colon cancer.

Oxitan is given to you through your veins. Your health care specialist will prescribe the amount that is appropriate for you. Your health care provider will treat you with several medicines for your cancer. You must do exactly what your health care professional has taught you. Some medicines may be given to you before Oxiplatin to help prevent nausea and vomiting. Oxitan 50mg/25ml is administered with two other chemotherapy medicines, Leucovorin and 5 fluorouracil. Each therapy is given over two days. The patient receives this anticancer drug only on the first day, and usually two weeks fall between each chemotherapy treatment course. Normally, your health care specialist will determine the duration of treatment.

Treatment for Day 1:

Oxitan and Leucovorin are administered through a thin plastic tube put into a vein and given for two hours. You will be under the supervision of a health care provider during this time. After Oxiplatin and Leucovorin are finished, two doses of 5 fluorouracil will be administered. The first one is straightly administered into your I.V tube, while the second dose will be given into an IV tube over the next 22 hours with the help of a pump device.

Treatment 2:

You will not receive Oxitan on the second day. Leucovorin and 5-fluorouracil will be given the same way as on Day 1.

If you have any doubt about using Oxitan, please talk to your doctor. Your doctor will prescribe the dose that is appropriate for you.

Do not use Oxitan 50 mg/10ml if you are allergic to any of the ingredients present in the drug or other medicines that contain platinum
