Posid 50 mg is prescribed alone or in combination with other drugs to diagnose certain forms of lung cancer and other cancerous cells. It also slows down the growth of cancer cells. This medication can be prescribed to treat certain testicular cancer, leukaemias and lymphomas, ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer. Etoposide is an active ingredient of Posid, and its chemical make-up derives from podophyllotoxin, a toxin found in the American Mayapple. This ingredient works by blocking the action of an enzyme in cells called topoisomerase II. The body cells take this enzyme to keep their DNA in the proper shape during the division process. The absence of this enzyme could cause the death of cells because cancer cells divide more quickly than normal cells; they are more likely than normal cells to be affected by Etoposide.

Posid 50 mg is usually given as a course of several cycles of treatment. The exact dosage depends on which cancer you have. Etoposide injection (also known as VP-16) is used in combination with other cancer medicines. Your doctor can tell you exactly how much amount of this medicine is needed to treat the problem. The oral dose is twice the IV dose rounded to the nearest 50 mg and given in 2 divided doses if greater than 400 mg. For combination therapy, 50-100 mg/m 2 BSA/day from days 1-5, or 100 mg/m 2 on days 1, 3 and 5 is usually prescribed. This Etoposide formulation is available as capsules, tablets, or fluid infusion into the vein (intravenous, IV). It is also considered an irritant that can cause inflammation of the vein through which it is given to cause tissue damage. Your nurse or doctor has to be trained to administer this drug. If you experience pain, redness or swelling at the IV site while receiving Etoposide, inform your doctor about it immediately.

If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or if there is any chance of pregnancy. This drug may cause problems with the fetus if taken at the time of conception or during pregnancy. Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you have a history of allergy to Etoposide or any other medications. Ask your pharmacist to know the ingredients of this medicine.  Keep a close eye on your blood pressure during treatment. This can increase your chance of getting an infection, so let your doctor right away if you have any signs of infection. Please do not have immunizations/vaccinations without your doctor's consent and avoid contact with people who have recently received live vaccines. Limit alcoholic beverages and, if possible, avoid daily use of alcohol; while using this medicine may increase your risk of stomach bleeding. Get plenty of rest and maintain good nutrition. Etoposide is not recommended for pregnant women as it may harm an unborn baby. Consult your doctor for more details and discuss using reliable birth control measures or contraceptives while taking this medication. This medication passes into breast milk, and breastfeeding can be dangerous while taking Etoposide.

There are some possible side effects of Etoposide, such as diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite or weight, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, pain, burning or tingling in the hands or feet, unusual tiredness or weakness, pale skin, fainting, dizziness, sores in the mouth and throat, stomach pain, eye pain and vision problems
