Osteofos 35 mg is an antiresorptive drug used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. However, its oral administration is associated with gastrointestinal irritation. It reduces the chances of having a hip or spinal fracture. It is also effective in treating bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Improvement in bone density may be noticeable as early as three months after you begin the treatment, even if you do not see the difference. For this medicine to work, you need to keep taking it as prescribed by the doctor.

It would be best to take the dose of sodium Alendronate once a week after you get up for the day and before taking your first meal, drink, or other medicine. Take the tablet while you are sitting or standing. Swallow the pill with a glass full of water. Remember, Osteofos works only if consumed on an empty stomach. Do not take this medicine with mineral water, juice, coffee, or tea.

After taking the Osteofos tablet, wait at least thirty minutes:

  • Before you lie down
  • Before you take your first food or drink except for plain water
  • Before you take other medications, including calcium, antacids, and other supplements and vitamins.

Make sure you take medicine for as long as your doctor says to take it. If you miss a dose, take one dose of Osteofos in the morning once you remember. Continue with your scheduled dose once a week on your chosen day. Consult your doctor before you use Osteofos 35.

Do not take Osteofos 35 mg if any of the following apply to you:

  • If you cannot stand or sit upright for at least thirty minutes
  • Have certain issues with your oesophagus, the tube that connects your mouth with your stomach
  • Have low levels of calcium in your bloodstream.

The most common side effect is stomach pain. Less common side effects are vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, gas, black or bloody stools, a full or bloated feeling in the stomach, eye pain, the rash that may be worse by sunlight, dizziness, headache, joint swelling in the legs or hands, a changed sense of taste, muscle, bone, or joint pain.

Osteofos may cause problems in your oesophagus. These problems include inflammation, irritation, or ulcers of the oesophagus, which may sometimes bleed. This happens if you do not drink a full glass of water with Osteofos or lie down in less than thirty minutes or before your first meal of the day.

Discontinue treatment and call you straight away if you get signs of problems with the oesophagus such as chest pain, new or worsening heartburn, trouble or pain with swallowing.

Problems associated with the oesophagus may worsen if you take Sodium Alendronate tablets.

You may get an allergic reaction such as hives and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, and throat. Worsening of asthma has also been reported. Tell your doctor if you have side effects that become troublesome or do not go away.
