Tacroz, .03% ointment, contains Tacrolimus, macrolide immunosuppressants drug available for topical dermatologic use only. It is a prescription treatment for patients dealing with eczema (atopic dermatitis). It is a prescription treatment for adults and children aged two years older. You can use the topical formulation for short or intermittent long periods of treatment. You can use the cream to all the affected areas of your skin, including your face and neck. The active substance of Tacrolimus is an immunomodulating agent, which effectively treats moderate to severe dermatitis in adults who are adequately responsive or are intolerant to topical corticosteroids. Once moderate to severe atopic dermatitis is faded or almost cleared after up to 6 weeks of treatment of a flare. If you are experiencing frequent episodes, it is possible to prevent the flare-up or prolong the time you are free from episodes using the topical formulation twice weekly. The topical therapy alters the abnormal response and helps a patient eliminate the itch associated with inflammation.

Use Tacroz .03% only to treat eczema under medical supervision. Wash your hands before using Tacrolimus ointment. Apply only a thin layer of the ointment to all skin areas that your doctor has diagnosed as eczema. Cover the entire affected area. For most people, a pea-sized amount is enough to treat the entire skin area. Apply the topical formulation twice daily, about 12 hours apart. Before applying the ointment after a bath or shower, make sure you apply the medication over completely dry skin. Rinse your hands with soap and water before and after applying Tacroz. Use the medication only on the skin.

Avoid sunlight, tanning beds, sun lamps, and treatment with UVA UVB light. If you need to step out after applying the medication, wear loose-fitting clothes that protect the treated area of the skin from harmful rays of the sun. In addition, ask your doctor what type of sun protection you should use. Let your doctor know before you begin a new treatment while using Tacroz topical therapy or start using any other ointments, creams, or lotions.

Avoid using the topical formulation if hypersensitive to Tacrolimus or any other macrolide antibiotics, including clarithromycin, azithromycin, and erythromycin. Let your doctor know if you have liver failure, have any skin malignancies, or have a weakened immune system.

The most common side effects of Tacroz .03% are soreness, stinging, a burning feeling, or itching of the skin treated with this Tacrolimus formulation.

Most of the side effects of the topical formulation are usually mild and moderate and are most common during the initial days of the treatment and typically lessen if your skin heals.

Less common side effects include headache, flu-like symptoms, swollen or infected hair follicles, and increased skin sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. Some people get an upset stomach, muscle pain, herpes zoster, and skin tingling. While receiving this topical therapy, drinking alcohol may cause the skin or face to become flushed. You must inform your doctor if side effects continue to bother you.
