Risnia 1 mg is a prescription treatment for patients with schizophrenia (a serious mental condition that interferes with an individual's ability to think, manage emotions, make decisions, and relate to others) in adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17 years. It is also effective as monotherapy or combination therapy with lithium or valproate as the maintenance therapy for patients with bipolar I disorder. The medicine contains the active ingredient Risperidone, which also treats irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents aged 5 to 16.

1. In Schizophrenia  

For patients who have never taken a Risperidone tablet, it is suggested to establish tolerability with oral Risperidone before initiating treatment with Risnia. Risperidone 1 mg can be administered once or twice daily.  

While it is not known how long a patient with schizophrenia should remain to receive Risnia tablet, the effectiveness of Risnia 2 to 8 mg at delaying relapse was demonstrated in the controlled trial in patients who had been clinically stable for at least four weeks and were then followed for a period of 1 to 2 years. During the treatment, doctors conduct regular assessments of the patient's condition to determine the need for maintenance treatment with an appropriate dose.

For adolescents, the dosage should be initiated from a lower dosage once daily, administered as a single dose in the morning or evening. Dosage adjustments, if indicated, should occur at intervals not less than 24 hours, an increment as tolerated to a suggested dose of 3 mg per day.    

Those who deal with persistent somnolence may benefit from administering half the daily dose twice.

2. Bipolar mania

The recommended dose in paediatrics should be initiated at 0.5 mg once daily. Consult your doctor for the appropriate dosing regimen as per your condition.

Risnia is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the product. Before you take Risnia 1 mg, tell your doctor about the following medical conditions:

Hyperglycaemia and diabetes mellitus, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a life-threatening neurologic emergency associated with the use of antipsychotic agents), orthostatic hypertension (a form of low blood pressure that occurs when standing after sitting or lying down), dyskinesia (a movement disorder that appears as uncontrolled shakes or tremors), blood disorders, seizures, dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), priapism (prolonged erection of the penis), disruption of body temperature regulation, increased sensitivity in patients with Parkinson's disease or with dementia, disease, and conditions that could affect the metabolism. Due to central nervous system effects, use cautiously when administering other centrally acting medications.

The nursing mother should not breastfeed while receiving Risnia 1 mg. The safety and effectiveness were not established for schizophrenia under 13 years of age, bipolar mania less than ten years of age, and autistic disorder less than five years of age. For elderly patients with severe renal or liver insufficiency, pre-disposition to hypotension, or for whom hypotension poses a risk. In such cases, the lowest initial dose should be introduced.

Avoid alcohol consumption during the treatment. The hypotensive effects of other drugs with this potential may be enhanced. The effects of levodopa and dopamine antagonists may be high. Drugs such as clozapine, cimetidine, Paroxetine, fluoxetine, carbamazepine, and ranitidine may affect the mode of action of Risperidone.

In clinical trials, the most common side effects were fatigue, rhinitis, appetite, somnolence, increased saliva, vomiting, urinary continence, parkinsonism, constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, dry mouth, tremor, dyspepsia, fever, dystonia, rash, anxiety and upper respiratory tract infection.  Talk to your doctor if any of these persist and become bothersome.
