Stemetil MD contains Prochlorperazine, which belongs to a class of medications known as Phenothiazines. It is used in the management of the following conditions:

1. Vertigo - Vertigo makes you feel like you are spinning when you are not. It is often caused by Meniere’s disease (an inner ear problem). Stemetil MD treats the spinning sensation effectively. If you feel dizzy while getting up from the bed, sit for some time and then stand slowly to avoid an accidental fall.

2. Nausea - Stemetil MD controls nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy. It also treats nausea and vomiting after an operation in adults. Prochlorperazine, the active ingredient in the medicine, works by blocking the action of certain chemicals in the body that make you unwell or feel sick.

3. Migraine - Stemeti MD help in the treatment and prevention of migraine headaches. It is believed to change the electrical activity in the brain and block the release of chemicals that bring pain sensation and the signals that cause nausea/vomiting associated with migraine headaches. Reducing the frequency and further migraine episodes can help you perform daily activities, thus improving your quality of life.

4. Short-term anxiety - Stemetil MD reduces symptoms of anxiety that are usually triggered during a stressful situation that lasts for a shorter duration. It helps you manage feelings of restlessness, trouble concentrating, tiredness, and irritability. Hence, the medication help goes easy with your daily activities and makes you more productive.

Take Stemetil MD 5 mg orally exactly as prescribed by your doctor. During the first few days, your doctor may gradually increase your dose to allow your body to adjust to the medicine. Do not take more tablets or increase your dose without consulting your doctor. Your condition will not improve any faster, but the risk of serious side effects will be increased. Do not discontinue treatment suddenly without your doctor’s approval.  

The usual adult dose is 5 to 10 mg three or four times daily to treat nausea and vomiting. A dose of 5 to 10 mg may be prescribed in mild cases.

For the treatment of psychiatric illness, the usual initial dose is 10 mg there or four times a day. Doses may vary according to individual conditions and should be increased gradually by your doctor until your condition is under control.     

Children’s doses are usually based do weight and must be administered in divided doses. The medicine is not recommended for children under two years of age or with a body weight of less than 9 Kg. Your doctor may increase or decrease your dose depending on your condition.

You should not take Stemil MD if you have the following:

   — A severe heart or blood vessel disease

   — Severe renal insufficiency

   — Hepatic impairment

   — Has brain damage

   — Drowsiness, breathing problems, weak pulse

   — An allergy to Prochlorperazine or any of the ingredients in this medicine

   — A blood cell disease such as anaemia, low white blood cells, and low blood platelets.

Before you use Stemetil MD, talk to your doctor if any of the following applies to you:

   — You have heart disease, prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma or have/had a seizure

   — You have an alcohol addiction. You should not take Stemil MD if you are under the effects of Stemil MD.

   — Stemetil MD should not be used in pregnant and breastfeeding women unless their doctor considers the benefits outweigh the potential risk to the fetus.

   — You are taking barbiturates, narcotics, painkillers, antihistamines, or other medicines that make you drowsy  

Prochlorperazine may affect the mental and physical abilities needed to perform hazardous activities such as driving a vehicle, or operating machinery, especially during the first few days of the treatment. You should be careful when performing potentially hazardous activities.  

Side effects of Stemetil MD may include headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, nasal congestion, dry mouth, changes in libido, milk production in both men and women, swelling of the breasts, menstrual changes, blurred vision, and weight changes. If any of these affects you severely, inform your doctor.
