US Brand Name Dostinex
Strength 0.5 mg
Generic Name Cabergoline

Cabgolin 0.5 mg is prescribed to treat high levels of prolactin in your body. The drug also effectively stops breast milk production in cases of abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. The active ingredient is Cabergoline, an ergot derivative, which is a dopamine receptor agonist. It is used as a first-line drug in the management of prolactinomas.

In scientific language, the drug Cabergoline is indicated for treating hyperprolactinemic disorders, either idiopathic or due to pituitary adenomas. Hyperprolactinemia is the presence of high levels of prolactin hormone in the blood. Prolactin hormone is produced by the pituitary gland, is primarily associated with lactation and plays a key role in breast development during pregnancy. High levels of prolactin may cause spontaneous flow of breast milk and disruptions in the menstrual period in women.

Depending on the intensity of your medical condition, the doctor may recommend the dose. Follow the advice given to you by your doctor as far as the dosage is concerned.  Cabergoline is available in oral dosage form, taken orally with or without food. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, do not take two doses at the same time.

Inform your physician if you have high blood pressure or heart disease. Pregnant, planning to conceive, and nursing moms must also specify their health condition to their doctor if prescribed Cabgolin. Also, don’t forget to mention all the medications you may be taking, including health supplements. Regular blood pressure monitoring should be done while you are on this medication.
