Calaptin SR 120 is a drug given to patients who experience hypertension issues. The medicine belongs to the calcium channel blockers category. It aids smooth arterial blood flow and reduces blood pressure. It is also used to treat chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and other cardiovascular conditions like cardiomyopathy. You should not take it if you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients in Losar tablets. The medicine should not be used with caution if you have diabetes and take a medication called aliskiren to reduce blood pressure.   

You must take medicine exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Your doctor may adjust the dose as per requirement. You may take it before or after or consuming food. Let your doctor know of all the medicine that you have been using. These may include all your prescription and non-prescription medicine, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially, inform your doctor about potassium supplements, water pills, salt substitutes containing potassium, medicine to treat arthritis, and other medicine to reduce blood pressure.

Calaptin SR 120 mg should not be used in patients with severe renal impairment, including those undergoing dialysis. It can also be harmful to patients with active liver disease, unexplained persistent liver abnormalities, pre-existing bladder disease, nursing mothers, and patients with known hypersensitivity to Verapamil.  

Limited evidence in children and adolescents at Verapamil dose; therefore, it should be used with caution in such population. Women of childbearing age must exercise strict birth control procedures. If pregnancy occurs despite following birth control measures, discontinue Calaptin. Women who are planning pregnancy should discontinue this cholesterol-lowering drug several months before conception. Mild white blood cell decreases have been observed in patients during the initial days of the treatment. Abnormal liver function has been observed during the treatment. However, the abnormalities disappear when therapy with Verapamil formulation is discontinued.  Treatment with the antihypertensive drug is often associated with myositis in patients with impaired renal impairment. To avoid drug interactions, do not take Verapamil along with Propranolol, Clonidine, Disopyramide, Erythromycin, Telithromycin, Rifampin, St. John’s wort, Digoxin, Dronedarone, Paclitaxel, Ranolazine, Tolvaptan, and Opioid analgesics.

All medicines have their side effects; sometimes, they are serious, but most of the time, they are not. Common side effects of Calaptin SR 120 are nausea and vomiting, dizziness, tired feeling, headache, lightheadedness, fatigue, stomach pain. Serious side effects that need medical attention are Severe dizziness, rashes, itching or hives, yellowing of skin or eyes, abdominal pain and discomfort, chest pain, and irregular heartbeat.
